What an amazing morning it is today. My new neighbor and I, spied each other through the evergreen boughs from our respective sides. She gave me a greeting and we started to chat about this and that. She wants to start a good sized garden. I gave her my thoughts about the sunlight and local bugs in the neighborhood.
She's the one with chickens. Someone might remember that day when they got loose and then lost? She now has a brand new rooster. The hens are not impressed with him and the top hen started hen pecking the poor guy! What a cliché, lol
A fancy rooster, a silkie, she called it. White with fluffy parts. I'll just have to do a chicken painting one of these days! Any way, she gave me two fresh, just laid eggs. This fresh egg availability is going to spoil me! She speaks with an accent which I can't quite place. Grew up on a farm from a village.
I will have them for my lunch today. Any way, I couldn't help but think of our girlfriend, Erin. I hope she'll again post her stories, and talk about her chickens.
Have a great day, TGIF, everyone!

I would like to raise ducks. I love the way you herd them with a bag on a stick.

Yum, fresh eggs from chickens allowed to be outside and get some exercise, love they way they cluck so softly to their chicks. Also really miss fresh cows milk. My 2nd cousins and I used to get up early and take a mug each to "steal" some from the cows before their dad, my cousin, would bring them in to milk. I especially loved the little Jersey cow that had the most awesome butterfat milk ever.

Special hens ??
LOL, special would be the one who lays the golden eggs.
I haven't had chickens for a few years mostly because I didn't have a proper coop and the predators took their toll on them.
This year I am attempting to remedy that and build a new coop with protected covered runs.
They will still be able to free range but I will control when, the rest of the time they will be protected from the many various predators we have here.
For egg production and effeciency I choose Rhode Island Reds over other breeds I've owned in the past.
My stock is coming from two different sources for genetic diversity, so that later I can raise chicks from them and be selective of what gets bred as my flock ages.
Close enough to the house that I can throw my alarm clock away, nothing like waking up to a roosters crow.
I have also been looking at turkeys (Narragansett) which I need like a hole in the head..so far just looking.
