Short Version - 15 year old girl was being treated one hospital before being moved to Boston Childrens after contracting the flu, somwhow complicating her condition. BC hospital then provides an alternative diagonosis, counter to the previous doctors and hospital. The parents disagree, and then exercise their right and responsibility to choose which path they feel is best for their child. BC and DCF get a judge to remove Justina from her parents custody. Given the fact that medicine is far from an exact science, the number of misdiagnosed conditions, the frequency of having a second opinion resulting in an alternative diagnosis, or simply the number of times doctors simply do not know, or will not diagnose, how on earth can anyone make the determination that the way in which BC wishes to proceed with Justina represents the only right and acceptable path to wellness? Since when is it not the parents duty to seek out the opinions of reputable and reliable physicians and make the determination? What an absolute outrage and perversion of the system. It is not as if we are discussing parents who neglected to get the proper care for their child, or even as if there are not physicians whose opinions conflict with BC's.

I can't say I spend time listening to this Glenn Beck, but ... since I watched a bit about this story ... (I think it was Dr. Phil... I know, you all hate the man! lol), and being that the family hails from CT, too. My curiosity was piqued.

I don't like the way medicine and big pharma have trampled the rights of the parents. Did you know that if you and your child decided to stop cancer treatment, even with a terminal diagnosis, you can't? I had a good friend who is a physician. He and his wife had difficulties conceiving, they were finally successful only to find out their child has significant congenital defects. These defects if left untreated, would not be painful or cause any discomfort but would end up causing the infants death within weeks. On the other hand, the surgery and treatment, would cause great pain and would only prolong the infant's life by a 9-12 months, with that time spent in the hospital being subjected to invasive procedures to monitor his condition. My friend and his wife were told they had no choice and faced having their parental rights terminated so their infant son could be treated. They fled the country with their infant son and spent his remaining weeks together. They came back to this country after his death and were immediately arrested. My friend was a physician and his wife a pediatric RN, I would think they would know best what faced their infant son but no.

That's the trouble with bureaucracy. Though necessary, it serves itself as a rule, feeding its own insatiable systemic lust.  Mindhunt, yours is another very sorrowful and unfortunate example of the way in which it often does not serve the person -why we ought proceed cautiously and judicously with the authority we would ascribe.
