A Russian warship docked in Havana Wednesday, without explanation from Cuba or the Russian government.

Cuban state media was also silent on the mysterious arrival of the Viktor Leonov CCB-175 boat, measuring about 300 feet long and 47 feet wide. According to French news agency Agence France-Presse, the ship docked at the port of Havana’s cruise ship area, near the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has unveiled plans to shrink the US Army to its smallest size since before the US entered World War Two.

Outlining his budget plan, the Pentagon chief proposed trimming the active-duty Army to 440,000-450,000 personnel, down from 520,000 currently.

Cold War-era Air Force fleets - the U-2 spy plane and the A-10 attack jet - will also be retired.

The US defence budget remains higher than during most of the Cold War.

The United States warned Russia it would be a "grave mistake" to intervene militarily in Ukraine, as the Kremlin ordered 150,000 troops to test their combat readiness and armed men seized government buildings in Ukraine's Crimea region and raised a Russian flag over a barricade.

Secretary of State John Kerry issued the stern warning on Wednesday after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the large-scale military exercises in what many see as a show of force or possible prelude to intervention in Ukraine.

"Any kind of military intervention that would violate the sovereign territorial integrity of Ukraine would be a huge, a grave mistake," Kerry told reporters in Washington. "The territorial integrity of Ukraine needs to be respected." 

In delivering the message, Kerry also announced that the Obama administration was planning $1 billion in loan guarantees for Ukraine and would consider additional direct assistance for the former Soviet republic.

What concerns me here is the pressure on Israel to accept pre-1967 borders. Even from  the strict standpoint of a "world citizen", that would likely cause an instability far beyond even what we know to be the case in the ME today.  Normally I'd opt for a more authoritative voice, but I like what Gene Simmons has to say on the matter.



 

This seems like a game changer. Cold war tactics....No problem with their presents(USSR), but a big problem with their military presents. Glad you posted this the media should be all over this. But maybe for national security reasons?

There are at least two schools of thought, IMO. I think I have an idea of what yours may be, but I'll address another one. Even if we take the landscape at face value, we see an administration confident that it can control the region (including Iran) and what would likely be an emboldened arab movement.  We should have learned from recent events just how unreasonable a endeavor that really is, given Egypt and Syria. There is no secret made by the enemies of the Jewish state what the end game is.  Go back to 67' borders, and the tension increases exponentially because of these security issues, with the nuclear option always in the mix.

 Iran has made it clear they want to wipe Israel off the map.  They don't want peace at all really.
