Wow, are we moving backwards or what? What kind of people write laws like this and what kind of people vote these people in office?

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/22/opinion/whitaker-arizona-law/index.html

Editor's note: Matthew C. Whitaker is an ASU Foundation professor of history and founding director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at Arizona State University. He is the author of "Peace Be Still: Modern Black America From World War II to Barack Obama." He can be followed on Twitter at @Dr_Whitaker.

(CNN) -- Arizona set itself up for yet another self-inflicted political wound, international humiliation, costly boycotts and historical shame now that its legislature has passed a bill giving people the right to discriminate.

The bill was written by the Center for Arizona Policy and a Christian legal organization called the Alliance Defending Freedom. They were inspired, in part, by the case of a New Mexico wedding photographer who was taken to court after refusing to shoot a gay commitment ceremony. The bill seeks to shield Christians from members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community who dare to seek equal protection under the law.

Specifically, the bill protects all individuals, businesses and religious institutions from discrimination lawsuits if they can show that their discriminatory actions were motivated by religious convictions.

Under the guise of religious freedom, however, the bill would enable businesses potentially to discriminate against virtually anyone -- not just Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, agnostics and atheists, but also unwed mothers, Rastafarians and Budweiser T-shirt wearers. This bill is arbitrary, capricious and antithetical to the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood that inform our documents of freedom.

It will lead to marginalization and oppression by allowing bigots to deny gay people access to virtually any business or service. The road to Indian genocide, Jim Crow, Japanese-American internment, the Holocaust and other iterations of human persecution began with laws that isolated and dehumanized entire groups of people.

What's in Ariz.'s 'religious freedom' bill?

  Arizona protesters: Stop 'anti-gay' bill

  Arizona anti-gay bill sparks outrage

Arizona's race relations and cultural politics are often misunderstood by the rest of the country. Racial diversity and progressivism exist within the predominantly white and conservative power structure of the Grand Canyon State. This has created an interesting dynamic.

Arizona has sometimes made racial and cultural inroads ahead of the national curve, while fear of major demographic shifts, including a growing LGBTQ community, and the erosion of white privilege have unearthed racial stereotyping, homophobia and xenophobic policies. Many outside the state misunderstand this dynamic, assuming we are a wholly backward place without understanding that it is much more complicated than that.

Nevertheless, Arizona now has the dubious designation as the first state to pass an anti-gay bill that seeks to shun and segregate in the name of religion.

Similar legislation has been put forward in Idaho, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Tennessee. The Arizona measure is the only bill that has passed.

There is a saying: "history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." The rhythm of chauvinism and acrimony in Arizona endures. The state long resisted creating a holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., which it finally did in 1992. It is not too late to shift course, however. Gov. Jan Brewer has the power to put Arizona back on the right side of history. The "right to discriminate" bill now sits on her desk.

The bill passed Thursday, She has five days to reject it or sign it into law.

"Arizona has sometimes made racial and cultural inroads ahead of the national curve" i lived there while working on as a horse trainer and wrangling mules at the GC, about the only racial inroads they made were allowing wetbacks to be employed in the most undesired jobs that white people did not want to do and exploit the shit out of them in working conditions that no white man would accept.

american christians/taliban whats the difference other than a slither of separation between church and state that still barely exists in the US.

North Carolina Pastor argues for a gay concentration camp. Charles Worley told his congregation, “Have that fence electrified so [the homosexuals] can’t get out. Feed ‘em, and– And you know what? In a few years they’ll die out. You know why? They can’t reproduce.”

– Kansas Pastor says gays should be put to death. Curtis Knapp tells his church, “Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them? No, I’msaying the government should. They won’t, but they should.” Listen:

– Indiana Pastor says gay marriage leads to abuse of children. “A decision to allow same-sex marriages today lays the foundation for the definition of marriage to become Silly Putty tomorrow capable of endless reshaping in the future,” says Pastor Paul Brewster. “That, in turn, is a recipe for children to be made victims of all sorts of abuse and the welfare of our society to receive a fatal blow.”

– Maryland Pastor says his ‘flesh’ likes the idea of killing gays. Dennis Leatherman shouts, “Kill them all. Right? I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea. But it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture.” Listen:

– Pastor advocates child abuse on gay children. Sean Harris says if a son shows what is perceived as effeminate behavior, a parent should “squash that like a cockroach,” and if they see their son “dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch.”

– At church, a child sings “ain’t no homo gonna make it to heaven” — in the same town where a fifteen year old killed himself after being bullied for being perceived of as gay by his classmates. Pastor Jeff Sangl of the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle cheers on.Watch it:

These incidents were caught on video or audio, but there are likely many, many more sermons where hate speech goes unrecorded and unrecognized. These pastors, of course, do not represent Christians broadly, but where this hatefulness goes unchecked, it discredits religious institutions as a whole and harms every neighborhood that it infiltrates.

Really sad isn't it? look at all the things our forefathers have done to minorities and then set here and tell me how great we are.

Prime example - how does gouda the watchman know you are not likely to find out? Is he some kind of God passing judgment? BTW, gouda your 2 month prophecy is almost over and things are pretty much like they were when you made your predicition.

Not sure what gouda meant, as his post contained a double negative.

It IS very sad, Admin, that you and vk4 can so quickly find so many
examples of prejudice, among people who I am sure THINK they are
'good' christians.  Sometimes I wish gouda & co could be right - sort
of - about their 'armageddon', ...because it would wipe out ALL of us,
INCLUDING THE SANCTIMONIUS BASTARDS who say they have
all the answers and just cos they pray to their god they will get forgiven
their sins OF WHICH THESE PREJUDICIAL RAVINGS ARE PART, and
and then 'live' on happily thereafter in their 'heaven'.

They stone to death for adultry, they cut of hands for stealing, the put
Homosexuals to death, they have the right to kill other faiths.
I warn about it and I,m called a hater and a murderer, and threatened to be banned.

Why not mention to your faithful posters about that most of this is from churches that
coming together with the MUSLIM FAITH,CALLED CHRISLEM,which I been wanting \to talk about,
but could not because of ban threatening.

Not exempting any religion from my comments;  just that at the
present time it is versions of christianity that seem to be a) arguing
for most discriminatary legal measures, and b) predicting 'world's end' most !
Like vk said, "christian / taliban, what's the difference ?".

Not to mention the level of HYPOCRISY, since all religions have their
share of closet gay members, who use homophobic language as a
'beard' to hide behind.

Christian's should be able to choose not to be forced into anything which would not honour God.  For example, marriages.  Obviously, gay marriages are not smiled upon by the God of the Bible. If it is indeed a free country, minister's shouldn't have to go against their  beliefs. If anyone doubts this world is going to pot, this should be your first clue!   All of a sudden, the U.S. is turning against Christians, even so called Christians are.  WOW.

I'm going to post a video, I know most won't watch it, however, I believe it to be true.
Arguing is futile and I'm not going to be drawn into one, so if that is your goal, you're going to be disappointed.  This is my opinion, and no one here is going to change it.

Many have disagreed over the exact location of the mystery Babylon the Bible speaks of saying it is in Iraq, however, I believe it to be the U.S. A.  An Eagle born of a Lion ( Britain) unwalled borders, a young country who is the top trader and most powerful  totally ransacked by the country of the North, the bear.  Who's country has the Bear as the National animal?  Russia of course.  Oh, and NY city just happens to have a city called Babylon right on the water.  Can't get any clearer than that!
The Bible is pretty clear, spoken of by Prophets in the OT and the NT (Rev).  The outcome is total destruction. We have been warned .
Just wanted to note, this video  was produced one year after 911, BEFORE the Russian troops were welcomed into the U.S. by their current leader, and before the pact of Russia and Iran which has now just taken place.  To me (amongst many other things) more proof that the Bible is the true word of God, and that our days of glory are indeed almost over. (as the U.S. works it's little butt off to force Israel into giving up more land.).  SMH.

Red Sable, you obviously do not understand your own religion.  You are not to "sin" according to the tenets of your church, by choice.  In kind, the government cannot force you to "sin" against your reigion.  Right?  Now, please tell me what "sin" you would be committing by baking a cake or taking a photograph at a same-sex wedding.  When you can come up with one, let me know.  Seems to me the directions in the Bible are for the individual and judging was to be left to your God.  Am I wrong about that?

And Gouda, I hadn't heard about the stonings, due to the passage of Sharia in both the UK and here in the USA, please provide a link to the articles.
