If you haven't seen this documentary, now's your chance...  It's a "must see" in my book, and should force us to rethink the morality of keeping the orca and other higher level, undomesticated species in captivity for our species' amusement.

Worth the watch ( Much Enjoyed ) Thumbs Up
Horses Cattle & Dogs kill people too sometimes.

True, but I am of the school of thought that it's impossible for us to provide a captive environment that is suitable for animals of such size--how do we replicate an entire ocean?   I believe that we reached the limit as to which species are suited to domestication, and which ones are not...and the cetaceans are not among their number.

By that particular documentary, it seems that way.
(They can't replicate the needed space, or failed to when Tilikum was growing up). Regular Smile

I don't think we want these as pets (Domesticated) but i am ok with a population of some wild animals kept in captivity for (study/preservation/human enjoyment) the visitors to these places help pay the bills, and it is a lot safer for both people and wildlife than going personally to the wild to see them.

This Black Fish documentary will bring you to tears though. ( Meh... one sided and tear jerker, but that side had to be exposed) Glad someone else enjoyed it too!

I don't disagree, but for me, what is far more troubling is that rate at which we are losing species due the destruction of the natural habitats.  Once they're gone, they're gone.  What a shame.

That, and poachers.  Angry

Ever since I was a kid, it bothered me to see the cetaceans & great apes in captivity, felt like we were putting them in jail for the crime of not being suspicious enough of our species. Have always been conflicted about the psittacines and corvids, too.

The least they can do for the lions in that video clip is use on-way glass so they don't have to watch prey taunt them like that!

Once you place animals in zoos and such, you pretty much give up on protecting their environment.
A desperate act at best, too little too late.

Not sure that it bothers anyone, since we're all in the same boat, we just can't see the bars.

I think it's immoral keeping any wild animal in captivity, especially the dolphins and whales. Separating the mothers and their babies is sick and heartless.....it's all about the money.

I have been a volunteer at our only zoo. It is recognized as a 501 c 3 non-profit entity by the IRS. Without the conservation efforts of many of our zoo's here and around the world, there would be no refuge for some species. The better zoo's have their charges' needs and well being as their top priority. http://www.aza.org/partnering-for-conservation/

I read about the poisoning of the elephants in Africa, not too long ago. Those are the immoral ones, IMHO.

There's too many humans, and not the good kind.

Refuge,
you mean habitat,.
