read some interesting reviews on books on another thread, thought if people put them in a dedicated thread it may be easier to find.
1. here is a gut wrenching book that is not for the feint of heart - "the republic of suffering" a different look at the American civil war, focusing on the impact and handling of the dead. not an easy read but a must read for anyone with an interest in american history.
2. "the fear index" - a quasi-technical fiction based on facts about how equations of physics have been deployed by physics grads employed in the finance industry to make predications on the future values of hedge funds (that bit is real) the author takes some of the real and extrapolates it into reality based fiction - decent read for more geek oriented, ending is not the best. like the author ran out of time or ideas to make a good ending.

I am a Civil War buff, but I'm not sure I could read that book. I've never forgotten reading about how they placed the critically wounded side-by-side in rows and killed them with sledge hammers to the head. There was a picture of that happening, Very graphic and horrifying.

i am not a US citizen and i had a lot of trouble reading the book - hell it is a good insight to war in general and would not hurt anyone to try get a better understanding of something that imo will test our maturity as a species as war eventually becomes an obsolete notion period......or not.
