When confronted about this strange new situation where GM took all their bailout money and spnt it in China after Congress approved it thinking the money would be used to rebuild Detroit and GM parts suppliers, top brass expressed the view that in order to do business in China the Chinese law requires a senior partner in the enterprise be a Chinese company, so therefore they had to joint effort with the Chinese defense contractors. Of course that sidestepped the issue of why the massive bailout infusion wasn't spent inside the USA. And even sadder the new GM products with a couple exceptions are still fall far below competitive product lines from in Japan and Korea. For example the Hyundai and toyota factories inside USA produce far superior products.
The only vehicles that GM builds which are highly respected by car enthusiasts are the large Tahoe/Suburban type SUVs and the Corvette. The suburaban design was a costly one during the long term development and refinement and GM designers and engineers spent a fortune making it the best it could be in almost every way. It's basic design is still superior. The Corvette is essentially a legacy of Zora Arkus Duntov who was an engineering perfectionist and produced the world's best high performance V8s, and especially the noteworthy small blocks 283, 327, 350. Actual horsepower was always underrated and these engines were amazing as is the 350/400 small block still to this day. The Corvette's ongoing performance and quality has also been essentially a legacy to Duntov's performance leadership.
By the way just because Obama appears to have unclean hands in this deal and the Chrysler bailout too, don't think Mitt Romney is innocent either. The facts suggest otherwise. Either that or he was duped by his close advisors which is possible.
