Is that messed up or what. Did Christy say The GI bill helped his family by his dad getting a college education?

A New Jersey Republican stands before you tonight. Proud of my party, proud of my state and proud of my country.

I am the son of an Irish father and a Sicilian mother. My Dad, who I am blessed to have with me here tonight, is gregarious, outgoing and loveable.

My Mom, who I lost 8 years ago, was the enforcer. She made sure we all knew who set the rules.

In the automobile of life, Dad was just a passenger. Mom was the driver.

They both lived hard lives. Dad grew up in poverty. After returning from Army service, he worked at the Breyers Ice Cream plant in the 1950s. With that job and the G.I. bill he put himself through Rutgers University at night to become the first in his family to earn a college degree. Our first family picture was on his graduation day, with Mom beaming next to him, six months pregnant with me.

Mom also came from nothing. She was raised by a single mother who took three buses to get to work every day. And mom spent the time she was supposed to be a kid actually raising children - her two younger siblings. She was tough as nails and didn't suffer fools at all. The truth was she couldn't afford to. She spoke the truth - bluntly, directly and without much varnish.

I am her son.

BabyEagle, I am not surprised the Republican Party/Romney/Ryan stripped the Maine delegation of their credentials when they didn't tow the "party line".  Look at what the Republicans are doing to voters rights all over the country.......

Republicans began to actively restrict voting rights in 2011 claiming voting fraud and introducing laws in 40 states that seriously restrict voting. Some of these laws cut early voting, seriously impede voter registration drives, repeal election day registration, challenge citizenship for registered voters, and require voter ID (which incidentally is very difficult for many to obtain including veterans).  These laws effect the poor, minorities, elderly, students, disabled, and new voters, all these vote primarily democrat.  The Bush administration conducted a multi-year study on voting fraud and found only 9 possible occurances of voter fraud and was not able to legally prove a single case of voter fraud.  The Koch brothers bankrolled a massive drive to impede voting rights.  Paul Weyrich, a major right wing conservatist said "As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down".

JMO, but if you have to start cheating to get the votes to count the way you want, then your fitness to run this country is seriously in doubt.  Your message should be enough to sway the voters, you shouldn't have to resort to such tactics.

Interesting Gov Christie should talk about how the GI bill helped his father since the Republicans want to end the GI Bill.......Just another example of Republicans or their family using the very "entitlements" for a better life that they want to end.  Oh by the way "entitlement" is incorrect, GI Bill, Medicare, Social Security, Unemployment, etc, are all EARNED

by Blitzen on 29 August 2012 - 12:08

You're damned right they are not "entitlements". Medicare, SS,  unemployment comp will always be with us in one form or another for one reason -WE PAY INTO THEM EVERY WEEK and cutting the program/s would reduce the federal treasury by a very substantial amount. How the programs are administered is what should be a concern to the American public. Military earns their right to the GI bill by serving the country.

Making it harder for people to vote should concern every citizen of his country regardless of their party affiliation. It won't take long to get back to the Jim Crow days of not voting for minorities or voter intimidation. Is that what we do in America?  The Koch brothers have already invested millions to get Romney elected and and now they are using their influence to do all they can to keep some from being able to vote. Why? Think about it.

by SitasMom on 29 August 2012 - 14:08

NO, Romney isn't trying to get rid of the G.I. Bill............

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/romney-celebrates-gi-bill_647816.html

The other day, Mitt Romney released this statement on the 68th anniversary of the signing of the G.I. bill:

“Sixty-eight years ago today, the G.I. Bill became law. It was an exemplary act that gave unparalleled opportunities to America's Greatest Generation, the millions of veterans who answered our country's call in the supreme emergency of World War II. Today, we have a new Greatest Generation that has answered our country's call in the aftermath of 9/11. They have stood for us through many hard trials, and we must stand by them. That obligation begins with restoring our economy to health. Those returning from the front lines should not be coming home to unemployment lines. As president, I will work from day one to turn around America's economy and create good jobs for veterans and for all Americans.”
