Kalibeck

I'm a little freaked out.....I've been having computer problems, with multiple crashes & my start up screen listing my disc drive as disabled. Well the damn thing crashed again last night & I gave up & went to bed. At 1:45 this morning it turned itself back on again, loaded up Firefox& won't respond to the mouse. After rebooting I was able to shut it down. One of the gray boxes that appeared with shut down was Daemon.ex...a program I've never seen before. WTF? Is my computer being accessed remotely? It's scaring me! I cut it's power source this time, & am posting from my phone. If any one has any advise or ideas, I'd appreciate them! Thanks, jackie harris.

Is this daemon.exe or daemon.ex?

If you shut your computer down and are sure it completely shut down and then when you got back up it was on, is strange and possibly could be a virus.

I would download malwarebytes.com and scan the computer to see if it finds anything. If it does let me know and I can possibly help. What virus protection are you using, if you don't want to post it here you can PM me.

Have you recently clicked any strange links or for that matter any links outside the regular links on a site?

Yes it was Daemon. exe, this phone hasn't got the most friendly keypad. My computer is in my bedroom, & when it crashed I tried rebooting, etc to get it to restart to no avail, & finally just went to bed, intending to try again in the am before work. Instead it woke my husband & I up with a display of flashes & eventually the start up screen. The last time I took it apart I left the speakers unplugged....really glad for that right now, LOL! I will use that malware link you gave me, thanks, but it will have to be in the am, my husband is fairly tolerant, but he wants to sleep now. And I have a dinosaur of a computer, it's a 2002 Xi gamer, with a huge neon lit tower. Not your run of the mill Dell or HP, but the dang thing has kept pace for 10 years now, so I can't complain. But I also can't pick it up & move it very easily. I honestly wasn't expecting a reply until morning, but I really appreciate your help. I think I will leave it unplugged for the rest of the night! jackie harris

Oh, & the antivirus is mcafee. And, again, thank you so much for your response, I think I was ah, probably more than a little freaked out by this spontaneous resurrection! jackie harris

I would unplug as my searches lead me to believe you have something a little nasty. It looks like what I am reading it can be fixed but first we need to see what malwarebytes finds or if you can even get to that site. I would also think about downloading and scanning with superantispyware.com if possible, this will not help you with this problem but will take out a lot of other little nasties you may have picked up over time.

Lastly, do you pay a yearly fee for the Mcafee? It is one of my least favorite antivirus/firewall programs and I have fixed plenty of computers that run it and get a case of the nasties. If you need further help you can always PM me and we can discuss some further options.

Did you click on anything you don't normally click on? mcafee antivirus sucks btw.  Here is a site that should help you remove that off of your computer. Some sites said it's a virus (the daemon.exe  not the site I linked you to) though one site claimed it was unharmful to your computer. Still, I'd get it off of there.

Admin,

what are your prefered Antivirus/firewall?  I currently use Norton, but I have had a couple of issues that have required me to restore my op syst. I currently run  Windows 7 64-bit.

I use Zone Alarm. Found it to be the best. Not perfect but good enough, I also use the products I mentioned above and a few other tricks that help to keep my computer safer.

GSDguy,

The above link you provided has a less than stellar reputation. When I was searching last night at least 50% of the sites dealing with this had poor/dangerous reputations. I would bet you went to one in your search.

Please everyone use this addon to check links at search engines  http://www.mywot.com/en/download   this will not always show links at sites to be good or bad but you can always copy the link and check it in a search engine and it would/should show you. Plus, with Firefox you can right click a link and in the menu is a way to view that links scorecard.

Well, I got my computer up & running long enough to download malwarebytes this morning, but I had to leave for work before it completed it's scan. I'm way too beat to try to continue with it tonight, so I'm leaving it unplugged for now. When I have a little time I will restart it again & try to run the mwbs scan, & the superspyware scan, as well. I thank you very much for your help GSD Admin, & I'll pm you & let you know what happens. Thanks again, jackie harris

I ran Superantispyware, & that found & removed a Trojan, but nothing called Daemon.exe. I went through my programs & didnot find it, either; however I think I'll still keep it unplugged when not in use. Thank you again for your help. jackie harris
