vk - all the foxes I have seen here are really paranoid. I'll look out the window and one will be picking in the compost pile, just as nervous as you can imagine, popping up every couple of seconds ready to get out of dodge. Anything's possible, this was just uncharacteristic, and there are occasional problems in the area with rabid wildlife. I need some traps.

Poison's not completely out of the question, I thought about that when I took it away.
She hadn't eaten it, just mauled it real well, like a toy.

I haven't used any in a few years but rodents tend to cash it and it will last hidden away.

You could certainly train a dog not to pick up a rat...no problem at all.

Carlin,
have you had rabid animals in your area lately?
Foxes can get used to people and not run right away or even be in a hurry, unless truly threatened.

Carlin,
you half way answered my question as I was typing it..lol

Live traps are ok as long as you take every precaution and aren't breaking a law by doing it.

Where there is one there are more, you'd know if a problem existed I'd hope.

moons - I'd have to check about any recent reports, but it's not been uncommon here for the past couple of years.

I wouldn't trap unless I were reasonably sure there was a problem. It's kind of hard to explain the relationship between wildlife management here and the citizenry. Civilian participation, while not officially condoned, is generally anticipated, and dare I say appreciated. I'd rather capture it for fish and game to look at than just shoot it. This particular fox breed was protected at one time, and may still be.

Here the health department will issue warnings when rabid animals are found, what type and where.
Last time was a bat, not here but in the city, last summer early.
It's worth caution for sure.
I have a neighbor who found a fox living under his wood pile right under his deck next to the house, it came out to watch him grilling and he ended up feeding it.
Ya never know unless they start acting really strange but then you may have a real problem...Like the guy I saw on video being attacted by a fox in broad daylight in a parking lot.
Ever see that one?
