My grand parents were like that.
The didn't have an indoor bathroom until the mid sixties, grandpa couldn't believe people did that in the house, he continued using the outhouse for years afterwards.
i remember the mules they still used even after he got a tractor.
They were rugged people back then, not many people these days could do it.

Several of my dad's brothers and sisters were still using outhouses in the 60's. and late '50s. No running water, either. We city kids thought it was cool to go and pump water from the well so everyone could clean up for dinner.
Two of the farms even still had horsepower! That's yours truly, my brother and my dad atop a load of straw.
My dad was no stranger to horses. He drove a horse and buggy to high school for 5 years.

My great-grandfather was killed when the team he was driving ran away. He was driving the binder, and the horses spooked at something. He fell of the seat, and his foot got caught in the sheaf carrier strap, which meant his head was dragging along the ground as the horses ran back to the stable.

I remember that wagon..lol
No seriously I used to help bring the hay in out of the fields as a teenager, I could throw a bale as good as my older cousins.
There's nothing like the smell of new hay.
I don't know a lot about my great grandparents other than my family had settled in the area and had been there for several generations.
I do have a picture of my Grandpa sitting in his go to meeting buggy, and his first vehicle, a truck not a car.
I seem to remember more about my childhood these days than what I did last week...
I really like that picture Sunsilver, thanks.

If memory serves, that picture was taken in 1959. Boy, was I tall for a 6 year old! My brother is 2 1/2 years older than I am.
Later that same day: the straw being blown into a stack after the mow was full:
and below, my brother, my cousins and myself (the only girl). My dad interrupted our baseball game for the photo. Why I have an axe (or maybe just an axe handle?) in my hand, I don't know! We might have been using it as a baseball bat, if it was just the handle. What a goofy looking bunch we were! We look like we could be up for some serious mischief (except for the youngest guy on the end, there!)
Good times, good times!

Good news!! We got a lot of rain last night, and it really did an amazing job of melting all that snow. It also left my cochlear implant speech processor exposed on top of the snow, just below the satellite dish!
Not only that, the thing is actually WORKING!! The sound quality isn't 100%, but I suspect a few hours in my Dry Aid kit will fix that!
SOOOO nice to be able to hear again! I have had a headache for 2 days now, and I suspect it's from the stress. Either that, or the abrupt change in weather, take your pick!
I will go into the clinic on Monday to have it checked out and make sure everything is working as it should. If it needs repairs, they can give me a loaner to use!

That's amazing....
Glad you found it and it's not a total loss, I know something of what you were going through.
Yeah we got a shit load of rain too, snows all gone, hell it was 50 yesterday.

Nice pics Sunsilver!!,,,Love that curly red hair!!,,

by Sunsilver on 11 January 2014 - 15:01
Ruger, my hair was actually dark brown. The red is from a red hat I was wearing, perched on the top of my head, and almost hidden by my curly hair. Also, the colours in the picture have changed over the years, shifting towards the red end of the spectrum.
Ever seen old prints of vintage movies where everyone looked like they had a bad sunburn? Same effect...
Those curls were pretty wild, weren't they? My friends used to compare me to Larry, the guy on the Three Stooges with the clumps of curly hair on either side of his bald spot!
Alas, my hair is now almost completely straight.
