My 5 month old female seems to have a bladder infection. She started to urninate more frequently over the last several days. I noticed she would relieve herself when first let out in the yard and then continue to act like she needed to go again and again. She runs around and plays a bit and will then continue to squat as though she has to go even more. She does not seem to be in any discomfort on these dry attempts. I took her to the vet with a urine sample on Tuesday. He said her PH level was a little high, low white count, etc. She is on Amoxc twice a day for 7 days. She is now going tee tee in her pen which she has not done since 3 months old, even though I let her out frequently. (Every 1-2 hrs) The vet said it is rare for bladder infections in young puppies? Does anyone have any knowledge or expereince in this area? Any information or advice is appericiated. She is a great dog and hopefully this will be a one time event, or will it??? THX

Actually bladder infections are very common in young pups/young adults. And it can be a recurring problem. Unfortunately the vets first option are those blasted antibiotics where they are not necessarily needed. Do finish them now, but also give your pup pure cranberry juice (1-2 tablespoons 3 times a day, over food or in a dish - or put juice in icecube tray, freeze and give a couple of ice cubes each time, they love them) or cranberry extract in capsules. You should see an improvement within a week. Continue until all symptoms have cleared up, you can also continue supplementing as a preventative. Offer draft free resting areas for her to lay down at and make sure the bedding is not damp and will keep her body warm from below. Just laying in the dirt or on concrete flooring as weather gets colder can be a contributing factor to getting bladder infections. Food can have an effect on the PH of the urine. So a change in diet can also bring improvement. At this age time to feed a good premium adult dog food, like Eagle Pack Original Adult.

It is true puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would take the advice of your vet and give the ab's, would not give cranberry juice or capsules!

Hello DH, Thanks for the good info. I feel better knowing that it is not as rare as my "vet" thinks at her age. I'm off to get some cranberry juice and will start giving asap. I also agree w/ you regarding the antibiotics and know that many Doc's over-precribe them. I will continue with the program at this stage with the added juice and hope it works fast. I have been feeding both my GS's Eukanuba with good results until this bladder problem.

As a nurse, I can tell you that cranberry juice and/or capsules are a good recommendation for helping get rid of bladder infections or UTI's (urinary tract infections) in humans. Haven't ever tried it in dogs, but I'm sure the result is the same, as it inhibits the growth of E-coli, the most common cause of UTI's. Best to check with your veterinarian before giving it just to be sure!

"Best to check with your veterinarian before giving it just to be sure! " But hopefuly a DIFFERENT vet. One that is more aware of what is and what is not common in young dogs.

Thanks for the additional advice from all. I will check tommorrow morning from several other vets before following through w/ the cranberry juice. Always smart to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion when in doubt. It's frustrating to see my girl running around the yard trying to relieve herself every few minutes or so. My hopes of finding a good cure will hopefully pay off in the end! No pun intended!!!

My rescue dog came to me with a bladder infection due to crappy food coupled with grain allergies. The antibiotics didn't do a thing but the cranberry capsules did wonders. I did put down puppy pads because she was peeing so often she was undoing her house breaking. You may want to do the same as well as one in her kennel just until she's cleared up. Just a thought.
