Regular grooming helps. As I understand it, the hair folicles have a hooked barb at the root and if you REGULARLY brush/comb/groom your dog it make the skin vibrant and tight, thus tightening around the barb, holding it in place. Dogs that are not regularly groomed don't have the skin as tight around the barb, thus more hair falls out. You will experience some fallout, but regular grooming should minimize the loss.

Bathe the dog in warm water. Lather well, as you rinse, rake the hair out. this will get most of it out. Then rake while you blow the dog dry, and this will get out even more. You may have to repeat this a week later if you are at the beginning of the blow, but sometimes it only takes one good bath. The dog will look nice afterwards as the new coat will clean and shiney. susan
