I have a 12 year old female coming off of a herniated disc that needs to lose weight. I've got her doign short walks and she is on Thyriod medication Solinex (sp?) but I'm interested in some feeds specifcally formulated or Overweight seniors???? Any comments would be much appreciated?

I've just recently been going through this same thing with my 9 year old female (had her spayed last spring, and she *ballooned* even though her activity and feed intake stayed the same)...She's got a bit of disc compression, too, so I wanted to get the weight off her ASAP. I've always had extremely good results in this effort from cutting their present feed ration by two-thirds, and replacing that two-thirds with puffed brown rice cereal. The puffed brown rice adds fiber and fills the dog up, but doesn't bring much in the way of caloric content to the table. If you look at the weight reduction foods for dogs, by and large they all rely on peanut hulls to accomplish the same thing I've gotten with the puffed rice cereal...but the cereal can be had a good deal less expensively than a special 'diet' dog food. ;)

I deal with many debilitated and old and overweight dogs. I recommend that you put her on Royal Canin Maxi Light and depending on her size, up to 3 cups per day. Most dogs like it and it still has a lot of important ingredients, including sufficient protein. Also getting her to a swimming pool for water therapy will dramatically help her if you can do it. Good luck.

I had a dog that had thyroid of zero long ago, we got it up to 2 and half i think if I remember correctly. I kept him on Science Diet A special blend, but I do not also remember the exact name so just go to Tractor Supply and look for Vet Approved Science Diet for Over weight dogs, it will help u alot. Read the label on Science Diet bags - then have the good sense to NOT BUY IT -- Vet approved - means Manufacturer subsidized - Why do you think so many vets SELL THIS STUFF !??!! Opinions are like ***holes - everybody's got one !! (Mee too) Breeding dogs, and older dogs need LESS CARBS -- therefore less dry food -- MORE MEAT !! Yes, I feed a raw diet. And my wieght-loss tip this week is GREEN BEANS -- Replace 1/2 cup (to begin with) of dry food (yuck) with 1/2 CUP canned - no salt - GREEN BEANS -- This will make the dog feel full despite less food and help them lose weight. Many people (and VETS TOO) have used this as an aid to weight loss with good results --

I've also heard (but not tried), that pureed pumpkin, of all things, is another "filler."
