As many of you know Tueday April 10, Assemby Bill 1634 goes before the California Senate. Bill 1634 would make it mandatory that all cats and dogs over the age of four months old be spayed or neutered. Each jurisdiction(city and county) would be able to decide what would be required by a breeder/owner to purchase a annual permit for each unaltered animal. Each jurisdiction can choose the amount of the permits. To qualify for the permits these restrictions must be met: Proof of business license, Federal and State tax number, Proof dog has competed in one legitimate show or sporting event in the last two years, as determined by the local jurisdiction Dog or cat is of a VALID breed as determined by the local jurisdiction Dog has earned or is in the process of earning a title conformation, obedience, agility, carting, rally, herding, protection, sporting, working or other from a purebreed registry as recognized by the local jurisdiction. The common denominator is that each jurisdiction gets to make its own rules and set it's own fees. So if your registry is okay in your county and you take your dog in the city, you could be fined. There is no provision for someone visiting from out of state. People coming here with their unaltered dog to compete or as tourists will be fined. Anybody can see how this would help mass breeders and 'puppy mills'. A simalar law just got defeted in New Mexico. If this law passes in Califonia, other state are sure to follow. Anybody who wants to help fight this, USA, www.germanshepherddog.com and AKC, www.akc.org, have more information on the bill with links to sample letters and the names, addresses and phone numbers of the state assembly members. Anybody who can come to the state capital on Tuesday will help to get this bill defeted. I'll be there, hope to see you.

Sounds like a perfect idea. Hopefully it passes!

So, just how DO all you dog people advise that we stop the puppy mills, and reduce the hundreds of thousands of unwanted pets that are euthanized annually? I'm not taking sides here. It just seems every time the legislators THINK they've come up with a solution, everyone gangs up on them and starts screaming in protest. Here in Canada, the CKC has come right out and confessed they have no power to stop the puppy mills. That's got to come from the government passing laws that have teeth in them. How can they draft those laws so the serious breeder isn't hurt, but the puppy mills are put out of business? Annual license fees aren't going to do it. Outfits like the Hunte Corporation has really deep pockets, unlike the rest of us. Let's hear some sensible solutions! I have a good friend who worked in animal shelters for about 10 years, and finally had to quit because her heart was breaking over the hundreds of animals she was having to euthanize, simply because they had NOWHERE TO PUT THEM.

The puppy mills need to be outed. People need to know who these breeders really are and that when they buy a top quality dog, they are supporting a puppy mill.

Seems to me like throwing out the baby with the bath water. You want to eliminate puppy mills so you infringe on everyones rights? Too much goverment control for me. If this is what you want then remember when your privledges in this (free?) country are taken remember it starts with crap like this. Sunsilver, in this country we try not to take everyones rights away because a few abuse a privledge. Time to go watch animal cops. It sounds more like a bleeding heart thing. I am not going to alter my life and the lives of those who happen to like intact males because my heart is breaking over too many animals in the shelters. This is so typical of the mentality that we should all live our lives on FEELINGS.This is a gsd site, not Opera. Sorry for being so cynical, but I have seen too much of this broken hearted thinking that takes us further and further away from reality.

by autobahn on 07 April 2007 - 04:04

further and further away from reality? how about further and further away from what a real GSD is supposed to be? SO MANY of them should not be bred. Plain and simple. Something has to be done and if I have to neuter a dog that I will not be breeding, or not breed a female that 'might' produce nice pups, then so be it. Besides, a breeder who is truly in it for the breed would have no problems adhering to the rules and regulations, now would they? ;)

Wow, olskoolgsds! I'd like to see YOU spend a day in a shelter, helping the tech (no, NOT a vet, a specially trained technician) as he/she euthanizes dozens of dogs and cats, most of them perfectly healthy... I have no time for PETA, I'm not a bleeding heart vegitarian, and I'm proud of the farmers in my family. But I think you'd soon be singing a different tune, if you had your nose shoved in the reality of it! And the worst part? IT COULD BE STOPPED, by having stricter rules! You talk about not liking rules...we are all fans of a superb breed of dog that exists BECAUSE of very strict rules governing which dogs could be bred. Why is nearly every dog you see on this site a German import, if it's such a wonderful idea to have no rules about breeding? Talk about a hypocritical attitude! As I see it, the AKC is just in it for the money. Recent changes to their rules would have allowed AKC registered dogs to be sold through pet shops. I forget the exact details, but AKC would have pocketed additional fees for the papers when the dog was sold, in addition to their regular registration fee! And the dogs would have been supplied by puppy mills. The howls of protest from the responsible breeders in their membership were so loud that they backed down and decided not to do this. Purebred dogs should NOT be raised and treated like cattle, but that's exactly what puppy mills are doing. As we all know, they are turning out poor quality, sickly animals, which are giving the whole breeding business a bad name. If we truly cared for our dogs, we WOULD be advocating for stricter rules. I feel the rules are going to come anyway, whether we like it or not, because the puppy mills HAVE to be controlled. And I think it would be a great idea if the breeders who really care about the breed were the ones helping to formulate the rules! You snooze, you're going to have bad legislation by someone who knows nothing at all about dogs rammed down your throat!

And, as I meant to say at the end of that post (can't edit posts here, can we?) that ain't EMOTION, it's cold, hard FACT, just like all the bodies that go to the incinerator every day from the shelters!

Well this is just the tip of the ice berg people. Dictatorship is just a few years away for the United States. Give Bush his moment and he'll become ours.

by autobahn on 07 April 2007 - 13:04

This should be about the DOGS! Who cares if us humans do not like it. If it is something that will help those that have no choices in life and cannot speak for themselves, then I am 100% all for it. I am sorry if this offends anyone, but when it stops being about the DOGS, it starts being a problem.
