Life with animals is always interesting...

One of the dogs just ate a bowl of grubs, for the second time in a week. I was saving them for chickens.

The first bowl I thought perhaps wild birds had gotten to them. As  I recollect I did tell one of the working dogs to mind his own business regarding that bowl of grubs.

So now, while out again turning soil for gardening & collecting any grubs I saw, I had gathered another bowl of about a half dozen hefty grubs.

I realized I had someone behind me only to see aforementioned dog obviously jump back from the bowl as I turned around.

One grub left in the bowl.

Gee, I wonder where all the other grubs went?

Yes, I personally find it a little disgusting that he ate the grubs, though foxes & other wild animals eat them. It's just protein right?  LOL

too funny and I agree on our "human" level it's disgusting, but I would consider it "safer" protein than what we are buying in the markets, with all the hormones, antibiotics, etc.

milk & eggs with a 3 week expiration date. they have to be doing some funky stuff to get that.

and chicken, I don't even want to start on.

Although it's partly a faked show, the people on Naked and Afraid seem to relish the grubs..so why not the dogs.

There are worse things to eat. I think the biggest issues with eating "weird" stuff" are preconceived notions, appearance, and texture. Maybe smell. Some of the stuff we eat in the western world would be pretty off-putting to people in other parts of the world... hot dogs, bratwurst, jello, chocolate pudding...

Dogs and cats don't have any preconceived notions, but if it smells and tastes good (to them), in the absence of training or human intervention, it's fair game and self-rewarding. Dogs helping themselves to "candy" in the litterbox... disgusting, but the protein content keeps them coming back unless trained or stopped by barrier, design, cat, or human intervention. Unfortunately, some things an animal may choose to eat, like chocolate, are deadly or potentially so.

Never in my life would I expect myself to be saying this, though small blessing I know the dog ate the grubs yesterday...

Today when picking up dog poo, I saw what I luckily knew to be the desiccated body of a grub. Had I not known the dog ate the grubs I would have been in a major tizzy wondering OMG what type of parasite it that?!  It's huge!

And guess what, our County vet office is now all but closed!

So who knows how far I would have unnecessarily driven to find an open vet office, to tell me what hideous thing the dog had contracted & was now horrifyingly taking over his body.

I wonder if foxes & such know to chew more on grubs?  Little nibbles/shredding makes for better digestion & nutritional value?   Or perhaps they really only need/want the protiens/amino acids from the guts?
