Out of pure morbid curiosity-
What are some of the the worst pedigree or lineage/breedings you’ve seen on/in dogs? Doesn’t have to be on here... there are many other pedigree sites and ways lines are documented.

And what makes it the worst?
For example the dog is horribly inbred etc.

I’m not trying to start a biff with owners or breeders so leave names out of it if possible.
This is Just kind of a gag post really like I said
Morbid curiosity :)

I think some of the worst ones are the really close inbreeding like father to daughter, mother to son and brother to sister.

Many years ago when I helped fill out several GSD pedigrees on here, I came across what Fantom76 mentioned. All. On. One. Pedigree...

I can't remember the dog's name though. Which is probably from the trauma of just looking at that pedigree. I think my mind kinda died a little just looking at that train wreck as well. I even went over it three times just to make sure the pedigree was filled out right. Sadly it was. Seven plus freaking generations of horrible too close inbreeding. There were no photos of any of the dogs on it, which I'm kinda thankful for as I'm sure they would have been ugly weak things from the generations of close inbreeding like others I've sadly seen. Just imagine thin mangy Malinois looking GSDs and you'll understand what I mean. Not a pretty picture for sure. And the reason why they did the inbreeding was clear as day, as I noticed that the dogs were all faulted or "rare" colors. All the GSDs on the pedigree were bred around the 1990s too, so in modern times when they should have known plenty about genetics and health with a little bit of research.

Color breeders can get a little too crazy with inbreeding for certain colors it seems. I like dilutes myself, but dogs bred for good health not just pretty coloring. Good health first then coloring should be the way to go for any type of breeding. There are several dog breeds in which the only color they come in a dilute color and the dogs have awesome healthy genetics so it is possible.

First goes the pigment, then temperament.....deep pigment ( dark to black gums and roof of mouth is a good starting place to evaluate a dog's genetics)

Lunastar,
Are you saying that you believe, in the GSD, dilute pigment is correlated with fewer health issues?

You might want to look at this thread here. I'll never forget this disaster of a pedigree, and of course, the poor dog paid the price...Cry Smile

Here's what Gustav had to say about such close linebreeding:

If you look at the kennel this dog emanated from, they are longtime breeders....I cannot fathom that they were unaware that epilepsy was in the lines,OR that going to out crossed bloodlines long ago would have lessened the chances of this malady reoccurring....but in the quest to continue the TYPE that they bred for, things like this become prevalent. When you continue to limit the gene pool, with unhealthy line/inbreeding to achieve singular aspects in the breed (color, angulation, excessive drive, etc), bad things occur on a much more frequent basis than if the breed is reasonably and moderately breed for balance.

The ruination of this breed is the continuation of people breeding for what they LIKE as opposed to breeding for what is necessary, so that bottlenecks do not occur.

On a broader basis, I think the argument can easily be made that the Martin brothers' decision to excessively concentrate on the bloodlines of Canto v.d Wienerau, brought in hemophilia (which many continue to deny) and weaker characters. Also, Uran and much of his line contributed to weak nerves as fear is a highly heritable trait. Concentration on Canto/Uran has altered the working ability of the GSD compared to what has been done on the working side.

I totally agree, Apple! There is far too much close line breeding in the German show line pedigrees, and most of it on dogs who do not give good health or working ability.
