Hi everyone, I'm sure everyone has seen this movie by now and if you're like me..cried like you've never cried before...the movie should come with a warning.
I actually saw it for the first time only a few days ago...(and still feel a bit emotional about it..)

As per another members comment on this forum and yes, I know it's only a movie, but I was very disappointed in the scene at the end where the whole family is sitting comfortable on the sofa in a warm house, and the professors wife is showing photos to her grandson of Hachi (whom he has never met) all the while Hachi is freezing is ass off in the snow up the road at the station... it just felt like they abandoned him...
They knew where he was, why not make regular visits..introduce him to the boy...etc

aaarrgh, I know ..it's just a movie..I'll get over it.

Yes its just a movie - and one which does not bear all that much resemblance to the original Japanese events on which the story is based.
How many movies completely follow what you or I would do in a real life situation ?
Tell it to the people who bankroll film-making. Or just enjoy the product but be prepared to criticise things like this that you don't like / agree with, always knowing that it isn't necessarily 'real'.

Thank you for your reply Hundmutter.

Kind regards from the Blue Mountains, Australia.

I can't believe that they stuffed the poor dog! It breaks my heart that they would do something like that.

silverprince, I totally agree with your reaction to the movie's ending. I was shouting angrily at my TV screen, something I rarely ever do... Angry Smile

How was the real life ending different?

Unfortunately the movie is very close to the real Japanese story in the essential heartbreaking details. One of the best movies I've ever seen and one of the saddest. Enough to make you cry for days.

Yeah, that snotty family drove me nuts. With his thick fur, Hachi was probably ok in the cold. But it was the folks at the railroad station who looked after him. His family never even bothered to check on him. (I think the real world Hachi was better treated by his family.) And that snotty little boy who never even bothered to meet Hatchi prattling on about how Hachi was his hero -- puke! Skip the first and last few minutes of the movie and you can bypass the brat.

On the lighter side, they had a heck of a time getting the Akita actors in the movie to do what they were supposed to, except for a female they considered the Meryl Streep of the canine acting world. Hachi as a puppy was played by an adult Shiba Inu. They knew better than to even try to get an Akita puppy to behave. Don't get me wrong, I think Akitas are great but they are stubborn as hell.
