I wanted to get info about breeding. I hear some Breeders say that when a female goes into heat, they will breed 2 males to her and then DNA the pups to see who the father is.....I am trying to learn some tips about breeding to have a better understanding. Thanks, Rob

I have heard of breeders doing this, but don't know why...sometimes it was an accident. so they have to do DNA to reg the pups. I think that maybe more people do it with older bitches because she can only be bred one more time and they want pups out of different studs for their breeding program.(I think this is done more with American lines vs. German lines...) There is alot more cost in doing this...you have to pay a $200 fee to AKC and then $35 per pup to get the DNA done and then the litter reg, it is processed as 2 litters so there is more cost ther too. And really you have a better chance getting what you want out of a certain stud if you have a full litter vs half a litter, and there is no quarentee that only one pup will be fathered by one male and then the rest of the litter will be fathered by the other male... Personally I would never do this type of breeding...I would just breed my girl to one male and then the next time she is due to be bred i owuld breed her to the other. Heather

A friend has had 2 litters from multiple sires. Given the cost of it all I agree with Heather, why bother? The only valid reason I can think of is if the first pick studdog is older and maybe not as fertile as he once was. Breeding to 2 different sires then would make some sense, maybe a son of the first pick stud dog as the 2nd choice back up especially if the bitch were older or had some fertility issues in the past. I would rather have an entire litter from the same sire to choose from than a litter of 6, 3 from one sire, 3 from the other as happened the last time my friend did such a mating to litter brothers. BTW, the first litter where she used multiple sires resulted in 5 puppies, all sired by the same dog. A potential problem is - what about the stud fee for the dog that did not produce puppies? A repeat mating? A partial refund? No fee til the litter was DNA's typed?

There are plenty of good reasons for me to it. A fantastic female I am referring to is 7 already and I would keep the entire litter to perserve that bloodline and see which pups are the best to continue with. Its allowed by the AKC. DNA registered both males already, which I own (so no extra stud cost as mentioned above) - when she does conceive, I'll send in her DNA request as well. DNA the pups, identify them, chip them, tattoo them accordingly to which male is their sire. Its $35.-- per pup/dog for DNA registration. These pups are not for sale, so its still not an expensive ordeal (initially). PURPOSE: This way she can retire rightaway (here). Instead of doing it again WITH the other male.

Hi Heather, My male is DNA and so will my baby of not one year yet and i plan on all my bitches to be also. To breed to two males is chicken to me as a good Breeder of HONESTY AND DEDICATION OF THE BREED. I am an older person trying to perfect the breed and when u cross this line it is most dangerous to even deal with a Breeder that Does this. Covering a Bitch is done by ONE male only and should be DNA certifed and can meeet the odds of whom is the true sire, why breed to two males in the first place makes NO SENCE TO ME? Go with the one that is true, honest, realible, dedicated to the breed and do not worry about titles, just get an honest breeding of a good puppy from parents u can prove whom they are. pat

Well Rob,you stumped me,I don't see why one would do this, but I'm kind of hung up on AI's and frozen semen. Call me old fashion but I'm going to stick with what I know and do it one stud at a time.......Some people fight change,I guess I am one of them,Fought with work tooth and nail about getting a computer to do reports,if I did not have one today I would die.....lol....
