I am fairly new to German Sheperds and planning on getting one in a couple of months but researching on them before i buy. I need to know one thing; I have a toy teacup yorkie in the house and my husband wanted to get a male German Sheperd. I was told that females are better in many ways, mainly because they dont get territorial over other animals and are better protectors in general then the males are. Is this true. Do you recommend to get a female over a male because of my yorkie? PLease advise. Thanks!

"mainly because they dont get territorial over other animals and are better protectors in general then the males are. Is this true." In general NOT true ))))

Get opposite sex of your yorkie. Not a great idea. GSDs play rough for a couple of years and this will make the quality of life of your yorkie less pleasant if not dangerous. It is possible but best to get another small breed. I had a fox terrrier for awhile and gsd pups would, in the spirit of play, pummel him into the ground. I was keeping the strong spirited fox terrier for my brother while he was out of town for several months. Kept him away from the adults...

My yorkie is a fighter. He never minds new animals. Just more to play with. So you're saying its not safe to have a yorkie and a german shepherd?

When I was little we had a german shepherd, the neighbors had a toy poodle...they thought it would be cute to have the become buddies...yes the GSD wanted to play and when he put his paw on him to play with him he killed him....it was an accident no doubt, but the size difference is what did it..

A tea cup yorkie + a GSD=lunch for the GSD. All kidding aside, I don't recommend getting a GSD with a yorkie and letting them play. I have a boston terrier, but she attacks all of my dogs, she is a pup of 9 months olf age and they don't tolerate it one bit, so we have seperate yards for the dogs, and only 1 of my dogs likes her, so we are putting her in a new home to save her from becoming lunch. So my recommendation is to not get a GSD, from experience.

Since 13 years we are keeping a little Chihuaha in our house together with some German shepherds. Her best friend was Xoschko(he died two years ago), both are grown up together. He had about 84 pounds, she near by 3 pounds. They were playing, Xoschko was very careful. If she had a dogcake, she did bite him into his flewz, if he wanted to get it. So, it is possible, but the dog has to be friendly and well educated.

I could work out,but I would not put it in writing...Just keep a very close eye on them at ALL times

I have 5 shepherds AND a teacup Yorkie too (under 3 lbs). They get along fine, and my shepherds are very gentle with her. But they were TRAINED to be gentle..no rough housing with her at all. Unless you can be VERY strict and watch them when they are together at all times, I wouldn't get a shepherd either. Accidents CAN happen...and Shepherd pups do tend to play rough. Size difference is the main concern. But, if you decide to get one after all, like someone else mentioned, I'd get the opposite sex and consider an adult that has been around small pets.

You also need to look for a breeder that does temperments test on thier dogs. there is always one im my litters that have the softer temperment and would do fine in your type situation. I have a small dog too and my dogs do fine with him. I would look more at show lines and not working lines....and do obediance...don't let them work it out. I do the Volhard temperment tests on my litters this way you have the results written down...I also watch the pups as they grow pretty close and can tell personality traits as well. Just be carefull and you will be fine...continue with your research. Heather
