I am wondering if some of you breeders have seen this or can tell me more of it. What I am asking is do you know, believe,or have you experienced that Dams who were born with back Dew Claws produce them in their future litters? JErry

Hello , All I can say is if the Dam is a Lighter female she should pass on light due claws , if she is a Darker female they will be black , Also if the puppy is Dark than the due claws wil be Dark , Some times Genetics can play into this , If you have a Dark puppy but has one or more white due claws this is Genetics and there is realy no way to tell how this came about . its just does and there is not much you can do to change it . Well I hope this helps!

Hi Jerry, We have a female that had back dew claws when we acquired her at 9 months..which we had removed when her hips/elbows were x-rayed.. she has produced one litter of six pups two had back dew claws...please have these "back" dew claws removed at birth....I have seen some double back dew claws..if necessary they will need a stitch or two after removing. Hope this helps!

Hello Jerry, Yes, the rear dew claw factor is genitic. I have seen some lines produces them pretty consistantly. Yes they should be taken off at birth. It is much simpler to do it then than to wait. They pretty much just "pinch" off. If you wait the bone forms and connects to the leg and it requires surgery to take them off. Debby

Hi I agree the rear dew claws must be gnetic as i do not have them on any of my dogs and if u do then it is in the lines u bought from. I was upset somewhat about front ones and ask Gerti my German friend that has been in my home if they should be removed, she replied: OH NOW, DO NOT TOUCH THEM GOD PUT THEM THERE FOR A REASON. So, I just keep an eye on the growth of them and all is fine. Never saw rear ones here?

I have been pretty fortunate and have not had pups born with dew claws, so far. With every birth, that is the first thing I look for.

No dewclaws on the front or do you mean none on the the rear?

by SGBH on 14 June 2005 - 15:06

I am speaking of REAR dew claws.
