Well, it's that time, to get hips and elbows OFA prelim'd. My bitch is a Rottweiler, so I do realize that strictly from percentages, she is unlikely to pass her elbows. (OFA says 40% normal elbows in Rotties). Both parents had hips and elbows done. Sire is HD Frei/A and ED Frei/O (sorry, I don't have her pedigree right in front of me to verify WHICH registry he had done, but I know he received normal for both) and Dam is OFA Fair and Normal.

I haven't had a dog with which I needed to do OFA since 2007, and at that time I used MSU's Dr. Mostoski, who has since retired.

After researching and talking to a number of vets here in MI, and along the recommendation of my bitch's breeder, I have decided to go with Dr. Wilson, off of Durham Road in Washington Township, MI.

It's still about a month away (her first birthday and the appointment is scheduled for 3 days after) but I'm needing a little help to make sure I'm dotting my "i's" and crossing my "t's".

So, below I made a sort of 'check list' to make sure I will have all of my ducks in a row for "the big day"

1) She had her first heat cycle the very end of December (Dec. 27th, to be exact) so there shouldn't be an residual hormones to affect laxness or lack thereof.
2) I've already printed off the submission application.
3) She was microchipped by the breeder so I can make sure they give her a PI number.
4) I have a folder with all of her medical and AKC information, I will be taking that in for her appointment.

But am I forgetting anything? I had her hips xrayed at 6 months, and the vet did a HORRIBLE job on positioning, so I am NOT going back to THAT vet, but Dr. Wilson (not the same vet who screwed up positioning) came highly recommended not only by the breeder but by several members of this board, as well.

For anyone curious about HOW bad the positioning was, I've included the xray below...yeah, don't laugh. I had to pre-pay for them. Oh well, ya live and learn.

Wow! You really had to pay for these?

by SweetCountryDreamin on 30 January 2014 - 20:01

Yes...and no, I don't find it hilarious. I have never gone to see that particular veterinary practice again...Like I said, you live and you learn.

Where are you located, maybe someone can suggest a better vet for OFA's.

by SweetCountryDreamin on 31 January 2014 - 00:01

Please note, I am NOT going back to the same vet who did the xrays I posted...I am going to a different vet. I am simply showing the xrays because no one would believe how horrid the positioning is.

I can read and I think you're doing fine;-) I will say to double-check that the info the vet's office puts on the film is correct and COMPLETE. I've had that happen several times where they miss something.

Yeah very poor positioning, thank God you're not going back to him!! Good luck!

by SweetCountryDreamin on 31 January 2014 - 02:01

Hahaha, thanks Jenni and Cmills! Yeah, I prepaid before they would agree to xray her. Mind you, she didn't have an sedation AT ALL at the time, but still, the vet came back in with them (the xrays) and I just looked at her and asked her, "Damn, you're gonna retake those...right?"

Yeah, needless to say, she didn't, needless to say, I never went back. Just ignorance, really. I even offered to help hold her (my Rottie bitch) but they declined. She may be a Service Animal and submissive normally, but getting strangers to pick her up and flip her on her back doesn't go over well. She didn't nip anyone (thank God) but I heard quite a few barks...she let them know ;)

I know  good Rottweiler person in your area, and if you like I can ask her where you should go for another set? As an ex rottweiler person, just because so many bad elbows are out there is not an excuse to breed more. People do not realise just how much bad elbows pass down. One off elbow in just one of the parents creates 73.1 percent chance of elbow dysplaysia in the puppies. I got this figure recently from OFA, because there is someone who intends to purposfully breed a gsd bitch with a bad elobow.  I wanted to know the projected number of puppies/customers this would affect. It truly is difficult these days to find decent elbows on rotts, but to use that as an excuse to go ahead with it is not responsible breeding IMO

GSD, I didn't say anywhere that I'd be breeding...I really don't appreciate the assumption, either.

I really wish my post would be READ. I am NOT going back to the same vet who took the previous xrays (posted above.)

I have heard wonderful things about Dr. Wilson (NOT the same vet who took the posted xrays) and he came highly recommended to me from my bitch's breeder and several others from THIS board who had their GSDs done at his practice as well.

PLEASE NOTE, ONCE AGAIN, the vet I am taking her to (Dr. Wilson) next month is NOT the same vet who took the posted hips. The vet who took the posted hips was a female vet in White Lake.

I really don't appreciate repeating myself this many times in a single thread. If there are no other comments about something I may have forgotten when I do go to the appointment next month, please, just leave the thread alone.
