how we start new pup to show training?

by stary_eyed_angel on 17 October 2005 - 09:10

I am new to this as well. I am enrolling in basic conformation handling class to teach myself as well as River how to show. The things I do know you need to teach is walking at your left heel on a loose lead. Also teach your dog to tolerate being touched in any way without any fight. Mouth opened, ears checked, tail checked, feet lifted, and if a male, testicles as well as they will be checked in a show to make sure they are the correct size and number. The dogs have to tolerate this without fear (hiding or shying away) or aggression (growling, hackles raised, biting) or they will be excused from the ring. This is all best learned now as opposed to later since it's easier to do with a 20 pound pup as opposed to an 80 pound dog. Other than that, I am too new to tell you. Your breeder should be able to help you and a conformation class couldn't do any harm. Even pros at showing sometimes catch the odd handling class to keep up their showing skills. ~Erica~
