I have three Imports from Germany and they do things differently than many dogs I have had over the years in the USA. They stick their face in the water buckets, almost up to their eyeballs, when they drink. Sort of like biting the water. They also lay down to eat from their bowls, and eat slowly. All of the dogs I have had during my life in the U.S. (which includes different breeds but none were inports) ate standing up, usually "wolfing down" their food, and lapped up their water with their tongues only. Is is a German dog thing, a Europe dog thing, or a U.S. only thing? The difference in how they drink and eat. Thanks.

Two of my dogs eat lying down, not sure why. As far as drinking, one face dives in the other paws at it. Both born in US but came from Germany in whelp.

Yes, mine also dig in their water. They also love to wade in a small pool so I guess they think their water bucket is a small pool. As for guarding thier food being the reason they lay down while eating, I can not dispute that. They are around other dogs. But they still do it when they are alone. Also, my dogs that are from the U.S. do not lay down while eating but they guard their food by stradling it with their front paws. I have never seen a U.S. born raise dog eat while lying down.
