Does anyone know or know where I can find out what the weight averages are for GSDs?? How much they are supposed to weigh at a certain age etc..I know it does depend on the dog, but just the averages.

Acordind to the book "O Pastor Alemão" , Reiner Voltz. 2 months - 13 kg 4 months - 23 kg 8 months - 30 kg 10 months - 35 kg 12 months - 37 kg 14 months - 39 kg 16 months - 40 kg 18 months - 40 kg 20 months - 40 kg 22 months - 40 kg 24 months - 40 kg (adult) I think those values are from a big dog, but it is writed in a grafic in the book!

Look at this web page. It is truly averages. http://www.nwk9.com/weight_height.htm I have been looking for something to tell me how much weight a puppy should gain. I know the vets have some sort of weight chart that shows for example that a puppy of a certain age should gain 2 lbs per week until age ?? I wish I could find this info. I will ask my vet for it next week when I take my litter for exam.

Good web page Makolady, this is more realistic acording to my experience. I had been breeding since 1993 and I believe puppies are not supose to get a lot of weigth. They are healthfull when lean and it does not affect their final development, as long as well feed the size will be determined by the DNA. It is already writed!

hello --- i am not often on this site -- bu i have noticed when i do visit this forum that this site has moved from a wondcerful forum about GSD to a seller's place -- a place to sell products -- a place to sell nice gsd's that no one wants -- for heaven's sake -- do your advertising somewhere else - or am i incorrect or alone about thesed thoughts ?? or or this site primarily for those with ulterior motives and self serving interests to be promoted ?? if so ... shame on you -- you are a disgrace to the breed = there used to be a lot of fantastic sharing of ideas and experience - i looked forward to reading the ideas of many people - what ever happened to this web site ?? as far as weight -- first -- gee don't be so wound up -- i think gsd people are getting way to paranoid ... and as far as weight -- gee use siome common sense -- and secondly , if you can't see if your pup / dog is overwieght [ aside from a novice ] you don't deserve to have a wonderful breed dog like the GSD .. or maybe any other

Alphapup..this is a forum for people who unlike you don't know everything...we are free to ask any question we want...if you don't want to play nice and answer nicely..move on...skip the post..don't read this board..it is not just for the "all knowing" it is a place for all of us to learn. I asked an innocent question and now I am not worthy of owning a gsd..? To the others who answered in kind...thank you for the info..

Alphapup -- Where do you see any advertsing? The use of such weight charts is to make and educated guess as to the size a pup will be when full grown (at least for me it is). It has nothing to do with seeing if a dog is overweight.

I judge by the overall appearance of the dog. It seems to be generally agreed that the dog should be kept lean to avoid hip/skeletal stress. You should be able to feel but not see the ribs (Working line dogs may be the exception to that). Also check for hydration and coat condition which are also good indicators of general health.

Thank you all my boy isn't overweight or underweight for that matter just smaller than average..he is about 7lbs less than average for his age according to the lists. He does look healthy and all..I was just wondering because he was the 2nd smallest boy of the litter and I wanted to know how he faired amongst others his age..and he is a picky eater..but no ribs showing!!

Most large breed dogs reach a bit less than one half of their adult weight at around 16 weeks. So, double the weight at that age and you will be within 5 lbs or so of their weight as an adult. This is assuming the dog is always in good weight. Picky eaters are not good, do not baby him, Brandoggy. We've talked about this before.....offer him food for only a few minutes. If he doesn't eat it immediately, the mean mommy then picks it up, puts it in the fridge and offers it at the next scheduled feeding. No treats, nothing, nada in between other than water. Said puppy will eat sooner or later and will not starve himself although he will go through all sorts off drama to try to convince you he is dying a slow and painful. A picky dog is a pain in the butt.
