Hey there everyone, We just had a litter of pups last night and to my horror, one of the females has her eyes stuck open! :( My first instinct was to just have her put down because my thoughts are that the eyes were not developed normally or this would not have happened in the first place. She would be blind correct? Anyone else ever have this or see (or even hear) of this happening before? Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Thanks

I have never experienced that problem.....but I would absolutely call a vet. I would think the biggest fear right now would be to have her eyes "dry-out". The vet may have you use some sort of saline product to keep her eyes moist until they can look at her. They may also have you cover them with something sterile. Good luck to you and your new babies!

I had a pup born like this eyes very wide open it looks weird also had a hole in the centre of it's open to the brain, we put it down.it's not normal you don't know what else could be wrong with it.

Thanks guys,....I think it is soo very unusual. I feel so badly about her. I did think about the eyes drying out, but it almost appears that the inner eye lid is covering the eyeball up, so in that case I don't know if it would completely dry out or not. This bitch wouldn't leave any bandaging on her pups, she is a super mother and is very intent on keeping those babies close and doesn't want anything on them. I still am not sure what to do, but I thank you guys for your input. Will talk to the vet tomorrow to get his opinion. Peggy

This is not normal for a neonate puppy, sorry to say.... the eyes are closed while they continue to develop.... Don't you have any after hours clinic that you could call?? I've never heard of or seen this.... Please post back and let us know, very interesting.... Call the vet asap ..... be ready to bring puppy in... Good luck
