How many dead? A gun and we would have had multiple deaths. I really don't think using a knife attack as an example to justify guns is the right thing to do but hey carry on.

I don't think one justifies the other period. I also don't think one senseless murder is any more "acceptable" or less tragic than a multiple. As a right in this country, bearing arms requires no further justification, any more than the device is at fault, or the evil by which we experience crime. Don't like it? Move somewhere else. It's so simple.
"How many dead?" Lovely.
Looks like you woke up on the wrong side of life the bed admin.

I think some people are glad I don't own stilletto heels! Or a gun! Knives, well. Not to worry, too much of a bloody mess for me. My squeemishness is well known.

My husband and son joined this form of martial arts years ago. You must be invited and have a background in another form of martial arts. This dojo can trace its form back to feudal Japan http://www.ustamiyaryu.org for those of you who are curious. The above mentioned dojo uses the Nagaekatana where the hilt is much longer than the standard Katana. That said, the experiment was to determine how much can be done with a sword when the other person is between 25 - 35 feet away and drawing a gun. The person drawing the gun lost every single time. Also did experiments to see what could be done with groups of assailants intent on harming the one with the sword. The Nagaekatana is a formidable weapon and in well trained hands could disable entire groups of gun toting people. Bottom line, don't bring a gun to a sword fight.
My huband used to offer training to others (especially women and elderly) in self defense by teaching situational awareness and using standard objects that one carries daily, keys, highheeled shoes, canes, pens, cellphones, rolled up magazines, etc. Anything that a person normally carries can be a weapon if used properly. It is all about intent and situational awareness, including trusting you gut (the only animal that will convince itself that the danger is not real is a human). If someone wants to harm you, then anything goes is my mantra.

Law enforcement officers typically use 20 feet as a maker within which drawing, aiming, and shooting an attacker with a knife is a low success proposition.
