Great !!
It will still take a year or so to get back to normal.
But as before this too shall pass.

Politics as usual. I agree; it is shameful.

by Carlin on 17 April 2013 - 19:04
The only shameful days in Washington, are the ones where the will of the people is not represented. Congress, contrary to popular sentiment and opinion, isn't employed to forward their own personal views, and get this, not the personal views of the president either. I take exception to some of the narcissism by which the president reckons Congress has made the "wrong" descisions, be it on the budget, or gun control. Now, whether or not you feel the postition of the American people was accurately represented through Congress is another story; that differs depending on which poll or media outlet you believe.

How often is the "will of the people" accurately represented in congress?
by beetree on 17 April 2013 - 20:04
It certainly means decommissioning the NRA, to me. I heard that rallying cry, loud and clear. To verify the standing of any of the popular opinion polls, we will have to wait for re-election time. Looks like we are going to have to fight money, with money, on top of everything else.

I think November's popular vote for president is a fairly representative sample; Obama received 51%. IMO, Romney shot himself in the foot, alienating much of the independent vote. If this holds true, the 54 yays in the Senate today sounds about right. It's not that you can always simply extrapolate results this way, but gun control is an extremely polarizing issue, and Obama's recent habit of chastising the GOP for holding their ground on this and the budget isn't going to do a whole lote in getting them to cross the aisle.
by beetree on 17 April 2013 - 21:04
Yes, Obama was very critical of the Republicans for voting en masse, because he more of less called them cowards, afraid of the NRA and their allowed lobbying power to wield clout, or pull support and cause their political suicide.
Carlin, I wonder, do you consider Obama any more narcissistic than any other past President? I think these days, any politician, let alone President, would likely have to have a drop or two of that trait. Still, I don't think Obama is any where near the dangerousness or degree of narcissism that showed up in say, John Edwards, or that Weiner guy. Oh, what's his name, in his underwear?
I will say, this was not the best speech of Obama's. I felt the disappointment. I know some think of this as an easy out, but no, I don't think so. It will be like a sine wave. Peaks and valleys, for a while. Probably a long while. But is isn't over.
