BabyEagle4U

I usually plant a little bit of everything for the kitchen gardens - this year I thought to try something in addition and different. My son wants me to plant gourds so he can make bird houses for a boy scout project. I can't stand gourds when they grow on the ground - I stopped cropping pumpkins because of this .. sooo

Did anyone try those gourd domes yet ? I seen a blog last week where the blogger used wire fencing to make a big dome shape then trained the gourds up and around and the gourds hang down as you stand in the dome. I think it looks pretty neat and they don't grow on the ground.

What's everyone planting this season ?

Gezz I have so much mint growing - it never goes away. I can hack it down every fall and it's right back again. Peppermint, Spearmint, Mint even Lemon. Grows and spreads like wildfires !!

I make alot of jug a teas though during the summer. That and milk is all we drink. LOL

I planted all the herbs last fall - I see the babies are up already !! Sun flowers are up. No sign of the radish or carrots yet though.

Grandeur's been nice to the squirrels lately since I hollered at her for killing all the baby possums last year. I messed up scolding her I think. Squirrels love carrot and radish.  Confused Smile

We grew different varieties of squash along the fence of a dry lot two years ago. They did great and the rabbits and turtles couldn't get to them. Cucumbers do great growing up a trellis, insects and critters can't eat them before harvesting.
Arminians cucumbers are our favorite, along with Chinese noodle beans which grow a foot long.

Reading about your gardens make me miss my home up north.  I have flowers growing in containers since my yard is mostly sand.  I can't wait to own my own home so I can plant my herb, veggie, and flower gardens again.  I am trying my luck at herbs but they don't seem to do well in the heat and if I bring them in the house, my dogs graze, no surface is high enough lol.

I've never seen a gourd dome. Post a picture.....I could use some of those for my melons.
For the first time ever I started my garden inside with seeds in those peet pod containers. Normally I buy the started plants.
I have to fix the gardens automatic watering system (freeze broke some of the connections) and till in some garden soil before I can plant anything in the big garden.
This year I've planted:
asparagus.....have some plants from a couple of seasons ago that are bearing stems :)
okra
white summer squash
yellow crook neck squash
zucchini
sugar peas
cherry tomatoes
roma tomatoes
cantalope
honey dew melon
potatoes
red and yellow onion

green onions (scallions)
radishes....red and white
carrots
Green Chili peppers...first time planting them
Basil and thyme
I gave up on red and green pepers..they never get very big and their skin is tough and thin.
I planted corn a couple of years ago and did not have much luck with it either.....if one of you has any suggestions for how to get corn to grow in sandy soil I'd love to hear them.
I also planted one peach, two nectarine and two apricot trees this year.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the birds (quail & thrashers) wont get to my seedlings.

Growing Gourds

BabyEagle, this link specifically talks about growing gourds on a trellis and says the technique  "... will support heavy gourds, like birdhouses."

BabyEagle mentioned squirrels,
I have had them dig up corn after it was a couple of inches tall to eat the remains of the seed kernel.
Needless to say, they have been retrained not to do such foolish things....!

Baby Eagle.... just throw the seeds on top of your compost pile and forget them. Come fall, you will have more than enough, especially if you put something up for their tendrils to grab a hold of.
