They are a hoot to watch...usually see a couple of them strutting around in my hay field, trying to impress the hens feeding there.

I love seeing the gobblers! It is amazing that they were pretty much wiped out in New England by the turn of the century. The old fields have gone back to forest and they've made an amazing comeback. Didn''t Ben Franklin suggest the turkey as the symbol for our country? Something like that. We have them, too!

Look at the beard he's got sticking out of his chest! He was pecking at his reflection on the side of Jens Excursion! She said he was really quite ferocious! We had an old mixed breed that used to get chased around by the Tom turkeys every spring. He grabbed the skeleton of our Thanksgiving turkey one year, ran outside with it, & dug a hole & buried that carcass right in the turkeys path! We called that Buddhas Mojo....(Buddha was the dogs name..), & it worked!!! We never saw another turkey along that path, & the dog was safe in his own yard! Lol! Those big Toms are tough cookies !!! jackie harris

Jackie thanks for sharing. That is way too funny. I think wehave them here but more in the western part of the state. When I was in PA I saw a lot of them and they were so cool looking.

Bee you're right. Ben did want to make the turkey the national bird. Don't quote me but he thought the bird was beautiful and a sign of strength. His problem with the eagle was it was a bird of carrion and he thought it would be a poor representative.................

The only good turkey is a stuffed turkey.

We have a resident flock here of thirteen, includes hens and toms. We refer to them as the dinosaur herd... They put me in mind so much of the dinosaurs in the movie, Jurassic Park. Taught all my GSDs to leave them alone. In fact the dinosaurs will cross directly in front of us, whichever dog I have with me at the time, waits patiently until the flock passes single file to the woods. They are a highlight at feeding time here on the farm.
