Hello folks. We see this term used frequently....Back Yard Breeders... What is your enterpretation of a BYB? Many of us do not kennel our dogs outside, breed three four litters a year, use our kitchen/garage for breedings, take great care to place our pups in the "right" homes, keep our dogs current with training etc. For those who think breeding a female every heat, let me advise you that after age six, IF the female is not bred, she may literally FRY her uterus as the progesterone stays HIGH. Considering that it costs a good $12,000+ to either aquire a titled female of high quality or finish a pup (whose hips may or may NOT pass) to a titled, breed surveyed level, I think if your female is producing excellent dogs, you would want to continue to add to the gene pool. To me a BYB is one who has a dog/dogs that are bred without thought of genetics to maintain/improve the breed, breed to the "dog next door" cause he's THERE, and take no care in placing those pups into responsible homes. I prefer to see dogs titled and surveyed before use, but...some people do not have the priviledge of a good club within driving distance, due to the size of our continent, but still breed contientiously, so I would not call them BYB either. With the cost of a top breeding, I doubt very seriously whether you produce one or four litters a year that anyone gets rich...you are lucky if the proceeds keep your kennel running. What is your opinion? Thanks Michele

i suppose placing the pups into good homes is very important and could justify the non- "top breeding" (to quote Michelle) i really don't think breeding four litters a year would get anyone rich if the breeding is done sensibly i.e. bitch given proper care during pregnancy etc

Michelle I'd have to agree with your assessment of a BYB and that's how I would define them. I'm involved in GSD rescue but I also just purchased a nice pup for Schutzhund. I get to see both sides of breeding on a daily basis. I just had to put down a very cute American bred GSD that was so fear aggressive she scared even me. She was just 8 months old and the owners had given the pound her AKC papers and all. I looked up the breeder and they had 15 stud dogs and I don't know how many bitches on their website. To me that is a BYB. Oh and no, the breeder was not interested in taking her pup back.

Back yard breeders are as you say -- bought a dog figured out that if the breeder got 800 -1000 bucks per puppy - then you could do it too -- not stopping to think of the consequences -- or expenses !! and not giving a hoot about who buys them - as long as they bring cash . Then there is the other kind of BYB - I have another name for them -- that have 2-3 litters a month and only one thing is important to them -- bring cash !!! I know the AKC has investigated some of these people - as they just registered too many litters in one year -- I'm not talking of the puppy-mill people -- because their "papers" are usually a joke - and fake -- and not with the AKC -- I'm talking about overzealous show people who think that having 30-40 litters a year will up their odds of producing more champions -- I guess. People who shop by price - don't care -- even a pet shop will do -- and everybody should be long since educated about the horrors there -- but they're not !! I'll say it over and over -- "Everybody gets the dog they deserve" Except for that unfortunate person who might have an epileptic puppy !! Nobody deserves that !!

I breed on demand. I run a waiting list and breed only when there are committed homes for the dogs. It is not about the money with me. I even refuse deposits. But I do get off on caring for those pups knowing of their future potential. I just get off knowing that they are going to homes and will be an intergral part of that family, protecting the family, ect. This breed is the best, and I wish I had more of a demand for my dogsl so I could breed even more of them. www.svhunde.com

In Europe, No one has a facilty to breed dogs. I guess that we are all doing our breeding in the back yard of our kennel. Is this something wrong? Why is this portrayed as less quality in America if you breed in your kennel down the street or behind your house?

Spaetzle, BYB is a term used in North America to denote those that just breed to make money or have little to no standards for breeding. Pick up a bitch somewhere (whether from a decent kennel or another BYB) and just start having puppies to sell with no serious thought to a breeding program, no goal, no health testing, not a care in the world except for the money they can make. Consider it an insult to that person when they are called a BYB.
