My vote: Live with it and give them something to see. If my government is so bored that they feel the need to watch my every move, I might as well give them a raspberry or two; I might even moon them if I have had too much to drink.
Seriously, I am just a regular person, nothing exciting my life style. If the government feels the need to watch me, they must really be bored.
If / when the time comes, I need to duck, trust me, even Google can't find me.

It's not the government watching it's citizens that's a concern, it's the gathering of data that is bought and sold with one intent in mind.
Manipulation and control.
This information isn't gathered to help or assist you, it's gathered because it is profitable.
We've touched on this before talking about facebook and other social media, even the links one clicks on is data.
Seems innocent enough, but it got people killed in China when Google started disclosing peoples internet activity to the government.
Well actually in China you just disappear.
It is a violation of your privacy but, no one seems to care, that right was thrown out long ago.
And it's not just your own government, politicians, and corporations buying your information.
People would really be surprised if they knew how much information was being compiled and what use's that information may have to it's purchaser.
Seems innocent enough.
Moons.

Great links. Thanks! I downloaded the Google opt out and the Duck Duck Go as my default browser which sent me to "Do Not Track Me" which I also installed. I've been using Wiki for searches, but also Bing. When on Bing I set preferences for "clear search history," But it keeps coming back with "results personalized," which I hate. Do not tell me what I want!! I also use CCleaner to delete cookies on opening. But it's almost impossible to get away from Google. Almost every website uses it for site searches and accepts Google ads, like, for example PDB. Oh well.
