I guess what I am getting at[incase it is not obvious] is which is the grammatically correct and preferred (pertaining to a dog's name) from a German standpoint?

Alte, Thanks for the correct explanation. I certainly don't like being misinformed. Heaven forbid I make a mistake on this public discussion board and piss somebody off, leading them to post a haughty and self-righteous reply. :)
GSDLVR, I don't think you should worry too much about being "correct" with your dog's name. It's not like you're going to lose points for it in a trial. Unless you've got altostland as the judge, in which case you're screwed. :P

Do I name him:
German von Shepherd
German von der Shepherd
German vom Shepherd
or
German vom der Shepherd
?????
and if it's clear, then why are there so many variations in the dog names in this database?

because depending on the word behind them they can be fore the most part all gramatically correct or partially incorrect. This is what changes your von, vom, von der, von den. If you look up the word "the" and the translations for it in German we use one word "the" they use der, das, die,den, dem for the same word. They also phrase their sentences differently than we do and also phrase their questions different.
