When even our resident, Windsor placing, ASL breeder/exhibitor says her ideal dog was her late, distinctly Germanic-type service dog, we really do have to acknowledge that difference !

To be fair, I was speaking more of temperament than anything.  Structurally speaking, his loose relation, Mikasa, fits my requirements very nicely.  Moderate (as he was), balanced (as he was), an excellent mover (which he was not).

But you'll notice that, in general, I overall have looked for a moderate and well balanced working animal.  I recently bred Mikasa's mother to a Polish import who I got to personally work myself, and spend a great deal of time with (I am lucky).  f things turn out as I hope (Lord do I hope my bitch is pregnant), down the road I plan on breeding my now passed boy to a resulting daughter from this pairing.

Well Xeph you did write ^^^ the only thing you'd change would have been Strauss's pigment, you didn't mention anything about his angulation, topline, etc etc LOL.

Thanks Susie - don't suppose you have a picture of that one to show us ? Thinking further about this, I guess my "Heart Dog" would have been one I didn't own; he was a black dog at the kennel where I worked (so he didn't live with me but was as much 'mine' as anybody's including the guy who owned his papers !); this was a dog in which I saw evidence of being unhesitatingly protective, although without 'formal' training or paper qualifications to prove any of it; a dog who was 100% properly behaved around all people and all animals that he met; a dog who was not "alpha" but as he matured was a good Beta male to the pack, a born peacemaker among dogs; a dog with a healthy bone structure; one not an overbred Showline to the detriment of his angulation and topline, but nonethless a lovely floating gait; indeed if I only had a sideways photo of him, I think he would have drawn appreciation from the majority of members here for his medium size, and shape. Unfortunately I could not bring him away with me when I retired ! [The thing you would not see from a photo was that his sire was a puppy-farmer's white stud dog. You can never have everything, can you ?]

Hundmutter, true, I did say that. Objectively, there is more I would have changed about him, but for the sake of general argument, he was perfect.

As much as I love my current crew, none have so embodied the GSD, at least in temperament, as he did.

Before the marketing ,showline and money people.judges SV sport people destroy the breed a German shepherd  is a working breed, with good structure and  good health anatomy.temper ,nerves and drives ,balance this will be allways the basics. Who can do any kind job in the world not what we see today too much focus on the IPO dogs and showline world.

German shepherd people look too much to exterior( on the wrong way) this is one of  the sad things about the breed
