I am one that places a little more emphasis on the genotype,( the genetics of both parents) than the phenotype,( the outward expression of both parents) when considering doing or considering a breeding. Both are important, but I have found that one seems to produce one or two very good dogs in litter while the other tends to produce better litters in whole. That being my experience and nothing more, IFFF I were to do this type of breeding, it would be with a working line female and a show line male.

I just did this combo. Sadly, we only had 3 pups, but all seem to be quite nice. I'm happy enough that we're going to repeat. Also, I'm holding back a male pup to see how he matures.

As others have said, I think it depends on the dogs in question. I wouldn't consider this combo with just any dogs. Our breeding was done with two dogs that we felt were excellent balances to each other. Plus, the showline was/is a very strong showline with lots of drive, no nerve issues, and some nice aggression when and where needed in her work.

yes you can breed a conformation line to a working line . Both dogs must be dogs of prove producing lines I got this advice from a breeder in germany a long time ago. I wanted to get out of conformation lines . He also said and if you do cross , keep a female and then breed from there . I followed his advice and I still to this day can't recall his name he was an old man that knew Eros Bussecker Schloss ,personally :) I bred a Fero Zeutener Himmelreich son to my V- rated Eva vom Haus Bachfeld SchH1 KKL1 I raised trained myself she was a daughter of Manto von der Lengernheide and great grand daughter of Uran Wildsteigerland I started my breeding program with in 1994 the out cross resulting in the first dog ever bred in the USA to achieve USA Universal Siegerin V rated Manta vom Rheinland ScH3 KKl1 3rd place SchH3 regional championship to date I am still breeding this line . That said it is not about crossing two lines nor 2 dogs you must have the understanding of their pedigrees , through training you learn their weakness and their strenght you must be your dogs worse critic in order to achieve improvement and have/ gain a foundation to be build upon.

I have a friend with a very large kennel who did these sorts of breedings. It wasn't that the dogs came out badly, most were sound genetically, sound health, good nerve, nice drive, etc, the problem though was as has already been stated, that it was damn near impossible to find homes for the pups that were left that did not fall either by temperament or structure, into one category or the other.

Pia, I remember Manto well - a good looking dog able to work.
Even in the late 80s people couldn´t believe that a "showline" is able to work.
He started for 4 years ( ! ) on international trials, he was shown on the siegershow 3 times, but he was a "no-go" for sport enthusiasts AND show enthusiasts.
It´s a shame...
