Aside from removing the risk of an unintended breeding taking place, the primary driver behind spaying before the first heat is the elimination of all risk of malignant mammary cancer occurring. That is a valid benefit, which can still be realized to a significantly lesser effect if the spay is done after the first heat, and drops to zero reduction in risk for that cancer once you get beyond the first heat.
