the only reason farmers got into corn for ethanol was the huge subsidies they were paid by the US gov, distorting the the market, it was a kind of welfare system  for farmers. outside the powerful farm lobby it did more harm than good imo.

The price of beef in US is based on supply and demand.  For the cattle producing states, the climate has been in extremes for 10 plus years therefor reducing the cattle herds.

As I live in Texas, cattle producing state, the primary ranches have been hard hit by a 10 plus year drought.  Add to that the large fires we had a few years ago that distroyed most range land..... Supply and quality went way down.   Many ranchers either sold off their herds or moved them north.    The ones that went north now have fat cattle, but few.  "You want my cow, pay top dollar.  If you don't want to pay it, see if you can find another."

Add the South America issue we have (had?), reducing imports/export.....  The more scarce and item, the more it costs.

Where is our own dear cattle-farming BE4U, when what she says might contribute something ?

LOL Unfortunately I disagree with 88% of what is posted in reply to the OP .. so what I have to say really wouldn't interest anyone currently posting.

It is what it is.

Also, a "heifer" is a young cow never bred. Female any age for that matter never bred. lol

And if "heifers" are being used for beef to begin with ... well, I dunno what to say about that.

We don't eat cows and/or "heifers" around here.

Sooo the whole "stud quality" in regard to a "heifer" lost me. lol

But ya, $3000.00 for a well bred "heifer" is pennies really. JMO.

^ you are a farmer right, you know that steers come from cows once they are born and casterated and cows were heifers at some point, you know that most beef places that have heifers that become cows that produce steers that people eat are not stud quality per se.

you know when herd numbers are down you have to buy heifers, from somewhere, that become cows that produce calves that become steers.

you know if there are no cows there are no calves to become steers and when cows are in short supply the price of heifers goes up so they ccan produce calves to produce steers that people eat leaving the cow to produce more calves to produce steers becuse steers don't produce themselves unless god miracles them into existence.

studs have heifers that become cows that have bull calves that do not hopefully get eaten unless they are crap and become steers and get eaten.

$3000 is a lot of money for a heifer that is not of stud quality and you do not even know is capable of producing a calf.

you are a farmer right and not just a troll?

"studs have heifers that become cows that have bull calves that do not hopefully get eaten unless they are crap and become steers and get eaten."

That's too funny.

Soo what part of the world you from vk4gsd ?

Because to me .. it seems you have a disrespect for US Farmers. Your post on Ethanol and Welfare is misleading and obviously a hit to US Government Subsidies or just facts in general. (NOT that I support US government subsidies or anything) but, if your going to talk about US Farmers, US Welfare and US Ethanol - or US "heifers" for that matter <LOL> -- get it right.
