Can anyone explain and help me find the reason why my dogs, often puppies like... eating their shit (feaces). They particularly like it while its warm or from another animal like cats hit or from chickens and roosters. I hate it when they try to hit the sleeve... or when they lck you to say hello ...YUUUKS.... I avoid to much mineral supplements because they give the puppies a hard time defacating // the minerals particularly Ca is enough on their dogfood thats why their active... I should be giving them CaPO4 tabs once I see their teeth being replaced // but now they are as hard they can get. Anyone knows a REMEDY or preventive measure when your not watching you dogs...??? Shame on the manufacturers of DOGFOODS // Even the professional or expensive ones are no match to DOGSHIT..

I am taking care of someone's dog who does it and it's disgusting, BUT... Solid Gold has this stuff I heard of called (brace yourself - it's funny) "S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop)" that is supposed to work. Go to http://www.solidgoldhealth.com The stuff should be under supplements, I think. They also tell you why dogs do this...I think it has something to do with vitamin or mineral deficiency or something. Hope this helps!

Put a few small pieces of Pinapple in his food every day, for about a week.

My boy Jake (a.k.a. poop breath) enjoyed his turds best when they were frozen. I brought Jake to the vet one day and asked why a dog would eat his own crap. The answer? "Because he likes it." For that I paid $50. The only solution I found to work was to scoop up the piles before they even hit the ground. Jake is up in doggie heaven now no doubt doing what he loved best--feasting on frozen feces with a big shit eating grin on his face.

I've only had one dog that ever did this and I was totally grossed out. Only when he was a very young puppy. He never had much chance of success because I was laid up with a broken leg and when he would squat, I was ready with a paper towel and flushed it. But every so often he sneaked by me. I would say ick, ick in a very exaggerated voice and eventually it sunk in that mama disapproved. I read up on the possible causes--vitamin B deficiency, especially B12---which could show the onset of malabsorption problems (such as PI). My dog gets a B Complex vitamin daily (the equivalent of about 30-35 mg). I give it to him for another reason, but it might have helped eliminate his interest in stools. At 4 months that behavior stopped. I forgot to say pancreatic enzymes are necessary for the utilization of vitamin B12. Anyway, that's one possible theory. (I guess this is why you suggested pineapple, David) Another, which I have often pondered, is his intense prey drive, and sharpness. Such an instinctual pup--was it a survival tactic---get rid of any evidence of his scent. I have a friend that owns a border collie with that incredile prey drive--off the charts, actually. The dog has another disgusting habit of rolling around in other dogs feces, and eats his own when not supervised. Survival instinct??? I wonder.

I'm not saying it can't be a deficiency, but I've had dogs that eat their poop no matter what food you feed them, how much, or what you put it in. I've tryed Forbid, and it works for some, but others just ignore it. I have had someone suggest spraying the terds with cyanne pepper spray (however the heck that is spelled)...the really super hot red peppers! I can't imagine one wanting anything to do with a terd after getting a super hot one..lol. Although, haven't tryed it yet, so don't know. It is a super gross habit, though, and I wish I understood it a little better myself!

From my experience... all dogs will eat cat poop and will do almost anything to obtain this delicacy... even if they could give two sh..s about their own (pardon the pun). I have only had one dog that would eat her poop... but she has either grown out of it for the most part OR (more likely) stopped because I switched her food. The food I had been feeding is thought by many to be harder to digest completely (although my dogs were very healthy)... their poop seemed as though it was not biodegradable and would stay in the yard until I got around to gathering it. On the new food their poop turns white in a couple days and within a week disappears on its own. So my thoughts on the matter is that dogs don't eat poop due to a deficiency (I would think more of my dogs would have done it and wouldn't have been as healthy as they are) but due to it still tasting good and seeming like food to them (because it still had some nutrition in it - come on we know how rich cat food is).
