Well-bred Staffordshire Bull Terriers are excellent little dogs.  The ones I've been around have had super temperaments and just been fun little dogs.

I second a well-bred sheltie (and by well bred I am not referring to show bred). I'll send you a pm.

rehabed racing grey-hound, rug in winter, lovely placid dogs that can do many non-bite sports.

springer spaniel, some lines can be crazy hyper but smart active dogs do most non-bite sports especially nose work, def gonna get me a nice springer one day. not sure about coat maintenence.

Smooth Collie;  Bernese Mountain Dog; Samoyeds love kids but more grooming;  good luck.  Nan

I would 'third' a well-bred sheltie. If I couldn't get a large dog, a sheltie is a breed I would look into. My mom had one when I was very very young, her name was Cupcake. :) They are good dogs, although a bit on the yappy side.

Corgi's are another small breed I like.

DEFINITELY avoid poodles - those things are demons when it comes to kids. The older they are, the worse it gets.

The people want a 35 pound dog.......^^^Greyhounds and Berners are a little bigger. So are Leonbergers. But if size is to be ignored, Irish Wolfhounds are nice dogs. Lol

LOL... there are quite a few breeds that would work wonderfully except for them being too big :)
They really don't want a big dog this time around. They want to stick to the 30-35lb range.....

Also no bully breeds, as their home owners ins. won't allow them :(

I never thought of a sheltie. All the ones I've met have been nuerotic & hyper.

Do any of you have knowledge or experience with Westies?

In recommending the Sheltie, I am remembering my own from when I was a child...sturdy 30 pounder who was happiest when I was setting up the patio furniture to be his agility course.  He was easy to train, loyal, only barked to alert, beautiful sable and white (like a mini-Lassie), patient with my toddler cousin, and easy to take anywhere. Now I am a GSD owner, but still fond of a well-bred Sheltie. Thirty-five years later, my brother bought a Sheltie puppy from a breeder in Oregon.  He is very pleased with his pup...smart, happy, a little sensitive to any harsh corrections.  Good Shelties are out there, just like good GSDs. :)

Have Basenji's or Shiba Inu's been considered? I don't know much about them either, but they are neat dogs.

Someone mentioned Soft Coated Wheatens - those are great dogs! I have a friend with one, who has just the cutest personality. Bouncy and sweet, and loves everyone.
