Susie, Funny that you say that the American Bulldog is not well known in Germany becuse some of the best looking and working bulldog are currently being bred in your country! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chestnuts-Little-Indians-American-Bulldogs/159025134136868
Chestnut's Little Indians produces some, stunning dogs and i believe there are at least 4 well respected kennels breeding these dogs over there. If you haven't seen one yet, chances are good one will show up at a trail near you one day.
Just keep an eye out.

1. What´s your favorite breed?
GSD
2. When did you get your first working dog?
I was 22 and had just moved to the farm.  That was 30 years ago.
3. How many dogs do you own?
Currently 2.  A 6 yr. old male German Working line and a 4 mnth old male. I like to start with pups though it is a crap-shoot (as so many have pointed out.)
4. Do you train, title, show your dogs?
Train
5. Are you a breeder? How many litters did you breed already?
Used to breed Jack Russel 'Terrors' (as my aunt used to call them) for on-farm rat control. Have never bred GSDs.
6. Do you keep your dogs or do you sell them, if they don´t meet your personal standard?
Have sold puppies.  Once I sold an adult JRT that was born deaf.  I taught her all the hand signals.  She was very bright but could not work in a pack due to her handicap.  The new owner took her to a big city and she became 'famous' in her new world.  I don't think I could part with my GSDs as adults.  If I bred pups then sure I would have to.
7. Do your dogs live in the house or do they live in a kennel?
They come in when they want to.  They need to be outside most of the time during the warm part of the year to take care of things. They like to stay inside in the winter at night.

Good thread!  Thanks Susie!

Thank you so much, all of you! I really enjoy reading your "dog" history, makes all of you much more alive for me.

For you, Fry: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rasseliste
This is the "dangerous dogs list" of Germany - red is not good - I´m living in NW, a lot of dogs banned here, including the American Bulldog. Owners of these dogs have to participate in a social behavior test with their dogs.

1. What´s your favorite breed?
German Shepherd

2. When did you get your first working dog?
My first dog was a working line GSD, I got her soon after I finished college and we had our own place.

3. How many dogs do you own?
Right now I own 4 dogs: 2 rescue mutts (one is a pet 7 years old, one is a flyball dog 2 years old), a 5 year old GSD, and his son who is 5 months old.

4. Do you train, title, show your dogs?
Yes, I have trained and titled multiple dogs in Schutzhund, SDA (tracking, obedience, protection), agility, flyball, dock diving, lure coursing, rally obedience, conformation (UKC and SV/breed survey), nosework.  I do the breed survey stuff with my GSDs (show ratings, AD, etc in addition to the Schutzhund titles and health clearances).

5. Are you a breeder? How many litters did you breed already?
No, but I have a male that has been used for stud and produced one litter with a friend's bitch and I have a puppy from this litter (and two others placed locally). There are two other possible future breedings I've talked about with friends.

6. Do you keep your dogs or do you sell them, if they don´t meet your personal standard?
Other than puppies that I've raised and trained for someone else (puppies that never belonged to me in the first place) or my rescue foster dogs, I have only sold one of my own dogs to a very good friend who finished his SchH titles and will be competing nationally this year. I evalute the dogs, the fit with my family and my pack, whether there is a better option available, etc. I am not opposed to selling dogs, but so far I've only felt there was one time it was for the better.

7. Do your dogs live in the house or do they live in a kennel?
They live in the house.  We live in the city so I do not have a kennel.  They are crated as puppies until house trained and reliable not to chew and then they have free reign, pets and working/sport dogs alike.

Hi Susie.  I'm amazed that the German list of 'dangerous breeds' you
linked shows several states, including your own, where the (English)
Bull Terrier is a 'banned' breed.   WTF ?  On what evidence was the
decision taken by these politicians or civil servants to ban this soppy
breed ? (Princess Anne's out-of-control mutt ?).   What about Mini BTs ?
Fascinating too, that GSDs are not mentioned, but Dobes & Rotts are.

< Sigh ! >
Oh well, here's the stuff to make me become 'alive':

1   Fave breed.   IS there any breed other than the German Shepherd
Dog ? Wink Smile  I like all dogs but have really only ever wanted to own GSDs.
Fell in love with the first one age 8;  there was a Shepherd watchdog on
a building site next to my Primary School.  A white dog.  Fantasised
about owning GSDs for ever afterward ...  And read everything about them
I could get my hands on.

2   First working dog.  Vida was my first, wholly owned, dog of any kind.
Through offering dog walking and pet sitting /boarding services etc, in a small
way,  I'd had my mitts on many, many dogs, by the time I was mid-thirties.  I'd
kept cats, but never allowed myself to have a dog, due to time I spent working
and on work & trade union related activities.  Vee was 3.5 yrs, retiring from
a fairly successful Show career because she would not be bred (high hip score).
By that time I had a local part-time job, so could give her the time she'd need.
Retrained and competed with her in Obedience.

3   Number owned.   I only cope with living with one [permanent] dog at a time.
Right now I have Taz - an entire male - from the same kennel but more 'sporty'
bloodlines.  He is 11 &1/4 yrs.

4   Training & Titling. When I got Taz I was again working full time (with GSDs), and
as it was a live-in job with unsocial hours, and as we have a distinct lack of training
facilities in easy reach, I never did as much with him as I originally hoped to.  He has
not got the BH, but is trained up to that standard.  I regarded that as something of an
achievement because I didn't take him until he was 17 mths and he was a wannabe
dominant HANDFUL !  Took me the first 3 or 4 months to even get him 'livable with'.
Was bred for Showing, but has too many faults to do so, even if I'd had time.  He
failed his Survey.  [ But he's got very good hips !   Teeth Smile]

5   Breeder ?   No.  I've been involved with other peoples' breeding decisions;  and
have whelped some of their litters myself.  And brought up or assisted with raising
the resulting pups, weaning etc.  But I have never really wanted to become a breeder,
not because I don't think I'd make a better breeder than a lot who ARE (!), but
because I know from practical experience what hard work it can be, and how much
of your time it takes up to do it properly.

6   Keep, or sell on if they don't work out ?   Both mine were technically on Rescue;
i.e. had not suffered, but nothing else in the way of a home lined up for either of them.
Because of that and because I only have one at a time, they'd have a 'home for life'.
I suppose I might move on a pup I'd bought myself if training was going wrong or if
it didn't 'fit' in my household cos it took a dislike to someone (animal or human), or
let it go if I could suddenly no longer afford feed and vet bills - but I think its pretty
unlikely I would do that without trying everything else first.

7   House or kennel ?   Indoors with me,  but I have a massive custom-built crate
for them to sleep in overnight and for putting them away in at times for their own
safety (if moving furniture about or having work done etc).  Also crated when in my
car, but that's just common sense and the safest way to travel them.  Both have
been very good at car rides.

Regards,  Linda.

1. What´s your favorite breed?
German Shepherds

2. When did you get your first working dog?
My first working line GSD I got was in 2005.  I've had working terriers and Karelian Bear Dogs though.

3. How many dogs do you own?
Currently we have two dogs. One GSD and one elderly Papillon.

4. Do you train, title, show your dogs?
Yes.  I train my dogs for pet purposes, as demonstration dogs.  I also train my GSD in IPO.

5. Are you a breeder? How many litters did you breed already?
No.

6. Do you keep your dogs or do you sell them, if they don´t meet your personal standard?
Depends on the dog and what I wanted it for.  I have yet to have to make that decision to sell, though I did return a young bitch to the breeder because I didn't have time and we didn't "click".

7. Do your dogs live in the house or do they live in a kennel?
Both my dogs are house dogs.
