Laurel h, I use biospot on my dogs who get harassed by flies on the ears. A few drops on the tip of the ears and no flies or gnats for a month, and stays effective even when they go into water. The biospot also keeps ticks off my dogs. I saw maybe two crawling ticks last year with all my dogs...and I'm in the middle of the woods, with deer even coming up on the parking lot at the house.

Virbac has a newish spot on preventative for ticks only that combines fipronil and permethrin, Effitix. Where I live in NoVA, the amitraz collar has consistently failed in the past few months, to the point that I find live, fully engorged ticks falling off my dog. When I called Virbac, I was told that they have a lot of calls similar to mine and they recommend combining different pesticide, I.e. Preventic Collar with Frontline and so on, as long as the pesticides are different. May I just say that I HATE, hate, hate ticks...nothing good comes from them. Nasty creatures.

to comment on the Doxy, yes, it does help, unfortunately there is a shortage right now. I filled an Rx for Chaos for 150 caps 6 months ago for $12 at costco. I called them yesterday for a refill and they wanted $180. Not to derail the original discussion, but the one manufacturer that is experiencing shortage (Watson) is the only one in stock around me for that ridiculous price and the one that doesn't have shortage, Mutual, is nowhere to be found. Go figure.

Laural, it's Bio Spot, contains IGR which prevents eggs from hatching, breaking the cycle. You can buy it at TractorSupply, dose according to weight of dog. I have not had fleas or ticks for 15 years since I first started using it. The only rime I apply it now is when I see the first crawling tick on a dog coming off the field or out of the woods. Apply between shoulders and at rump. The ear tips for fly prevention is off label, but works the best of anything I've ever tried. Only a couple drops on tip of ears.

Biospot contains a synthetic pyrethroid plus an IGR .. the new formulation contains ethofenprox while the older Biospot contains permethrin .. buy the horse label package as it is usually cheaper and is the same ai
