I wonder why a dog being trained to sniff out narcotics needs to be aggressive. Perhaps they were trying to dual train him. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Many PD use labs, beagles, etc. for narcotics, as the dog is a scent dog only, and does not  need to be aggressive.

The vet they used might have the tatoo number on h is records.  Can you show us a picture or two;  maybe someone will recognize him.,  Just a thought  Nan

Most of the state use US K9 Unlimited outside of Lafayette. Roger has almost every parish locked down. When you call just let him know what department you got him from and he can let you know if the dog was his. 337-316-0477

Worldwide canine in Texas has most of the north shore from Hammond on. They had a Tango, Male, Dual purpose sold to St Tammany. You can give them a call at

830-885-5948

This is a pic of one Tango they sold, they sold two Tango GSD in Louisiana
Good luck

I find it odd that some departments only train for narcotics. All the departments around us in Ohio train their dogs to do it all. Track, Narcotics, and protection. Only out of curiousity is there a reason they would only train for track or narcotics and not to protect  if the dog is a German Shepherd or a Mal?  Our Depts Shepherd can also be used in schools, he's very lovable but knows when to turn on the aggression.  :)

Many depts have dogs that are trained in narcotics only. They are usually cheaper cuz the dog doesnt have what it takes to be dual purpose k9 and narcotics is their main focus anyways. If they need a dog for tracking & apprehension they will call in for the local sheriffs dept.

Another way to read his tattoo is, put a good LED flashlight to the backside of his ear. Put it against the skin. It will show the tattoo.
Each state and each department will have different regulations as to what breed they use and what for. I was a K9 Handler in Ohio and then a Deputy in Maryland. Both had COMPLETELY different methods of every aspect of a K9 unit.
I, too, would like to see photos. Going viral on the internet is the best way to possibly find anything out. If I were you, I'd forget contacting the Dept. anymore. They obviously don't give a crap. You may just need to realize you may never know his pedigree. But keep searching and keep us posted.
