Two scenarios I myself experienced, owning a boarding/training kennel myself and being responsible for the care and control of "other people's dogs" on a daily basis 365 days/year.

Long-term boarder, a beautiful German Shepherd, whose owner was fairly local but couldn't keep the dog due to some court order (dangerous weapon or some such bunk) - the dog lived in the kennel and my house, for several months during which I got pretty attached to the dog.  Thanksgiving his owner took him home for the weekend - he needed to drop him off early in the morning, before I "opened the kennel" as I like to keep the dogs quiet until later in the morning for neighbors' benefit.  So I asked him to bring the dog up to the house - I brought him in the house, owner left.  Later that morning I stuck my head out the door, eyeballed the front gate as I always did to make sure it was closed and tied (at the time the gate was secured by a rope tie) - I live right on a busy road 55 mph.  I let the dog out along with one of my dogs, went back inside to finish getting ready for the morning's work.  A few minutes later a car pulled in, I ran out knowing the two dogs were out and if a car pulled in that meant the gate was opened.
Turns out the owner didn't secure the gate properly, his dog pushed it open enough to get out, probably trying to follow him (he had never tried to get out of the gate before) - and he was hit on the road and killed instantly.  The car that pulled in was the car that hit him.  After running out to check on the dog, I gave him my insurance information (his car was damaged pretty badly) and he helped me take my truck out and load the dog into it.  I called the owner the instant I returned.  He came right out and we both cried and grieved, he took his dog's body home with him.  Moral of the story - I was responsible for the dog, it was my negligence that I did not physically check that the gate was secured properly before I let the dogs out.  He blamed himself that he hadn't secured the gate properly, he didn't blame me, and we both learned our lessons the hard way that day.
I "could have" not called him - I "could have" only told him the dog went missing chasing a female in heat at the neighbor's farm, he scaled the perimeter fence and was gone, I couldn't find him.  That thought never crossed my mind, but you can see how it might, for someone that wasn't honest and responsible to begin with, as I am.

Another boarder, another good-looking GSD who was an absolute spookbag - was out in the exercise yard and when I went to try to get her back in, she freaked and scaled the 5' fence, ran straight as an arrow to the perimeter fence (another 5' fence) and pushed her way under and through that one, ran up the highway.  I was in my truck along with the guy who was working for me at the time - we spent the next 4 hours chasing that dog up and down the road, 4X4ing it across fields and down gravel driveways.  Until finally she was so exhausted that the guy was able to actually tackle her off the back of the truck, getting bitten in the process - but we had her.  I didn't call the owner, we had the dog, she was safe and unhurt and the hole in the fence was fixed and she was never allowed out in the yard off leash again.  If we couldn't have caught the dog, then yes the owner would have been called, and we would have stayed out there to at least monitor the road until she could have been found and caught.  Again, honesty and responsibility over all else.

I do not believe the story that was told at all. What Breeding Male or any intact male for that matter would leave the side of a female in heat? And why would this NEW IMPORT FEMALE who was in heat, and had only been at his place a short time come back and Teddy would not? He would have stuck with that female like glue, and they either would have ran off together and not come back or they would have come back together. All of this story is such BS and no I do not have proof but common sense tells you that this is NOT what happened by a long shot.

And for the record Cory is not the one that paid for the add on the Amber Alert site. Someone else with a good heart did. My contacts in Ohio said they have not see ONE SINGLE POSTER UP ANYWHERE so again we have a false story. Waiting until others started a Face Book Campaign to find the dog AND THEN AND ONLY THEN did he even post anything about this dog. This just really angers me!!!!!!!!!!! It gives good reputable trainers/boarding facilities a bad name. I mean accidents can happen we all know that but then you do as was posted above everything you can to get the dog back. This is just a BS story in my opinion.

I really agree that cory's story is BS.
The few ads by cory that have appeared online are truly weak and pathetic, back when he had dogs/pups or training services to sell, he did big online campaigns...what he is doing now to "find" the dog is a paltry small percentage of effort compared to when he was trying to sell a dog.

cory's apathy and lackluster attemps makes me think he knows exactly where the dog is, which is why he's not making much of an effort to find him.  he may have sold Teddy (with a new name and "new" paperwork?)  or knows where Teddy's grave is.

Bea, keep track of all your expenses while looking for Teddy or information about what happened to him, you should add them to your lawsuit.  I also think that anyone else who has put up money for finding Teddy need to be compensated by cory too.    Need to send message in the community that these kinds of things won't go without consequences.  Too many crooks out there who think dog training is an easy way to prey for money and ego without being held responsible.

Is this getting any play in the press back in Ohio, in the area the dog went 'missing'? That needs to be done ASAP--both TV and newspapers need to get 'press release' type of packets that include contact info for trixx, pictures and video of Teddy, mention of a reward for the dog's return... It's the holiday season, which is prime time for 'tearjerker' stories of trying to reunite lost pets with their people and the like. Teddy's disappearance should be like candy to the newscasts and newspapers.

I seem to remember that the dog was microchipped?? Homeagain is great about assisting with finding lost pets. They offer reward monies, help you put the word out in all areas, not just the one the dog went mssing from and they send out email alerts to all shelters, vets and rescuers that are signed up to recieve them. Please alert them if you havnt already done so.

by hexe on 08 December 2012 - 03:12

Shandra, yes he is microchipped, and trixx contacted them already.  Another plus is that the dog's DNA is already on record, which will make it a lot easier to positively ID him should the chip 'fail' or have been, um, 'disturbed'.

I am so very sorry that you are going through this hell.   Bob is right--there must be something in the water in the Columbus, Ohio area for so many POS poor-excuses-for-men to be flourishing in dog businesses there.   What a blight!

I agree with Molly and Hexe:   the story is fishy...and so is Cory's action/reaction.  Get a lawyer and go after this miscreant.  It does not cost much for you to hire a private investigator who can find out this person's background, others he may have done this to, and any current legal entanglements he may have, as well as an  assets search.  Because of so much information being digitalized, you would be amazed, if not astounded,  at the information a PI can obtain for you in a half hour, without ever leaving his/her office.  They have access to sources not generally  available to the general public, as well as to public records.   It is relatively inexpensive, too.  It would be well-worth the investment, if you ever sue this miscreant.

My recent attendance at the Indiana Working Dog Seminar left me excited and wanting more. The people were great, the info was invaluable...so I came home and talked it over with the club and we're gonna do it all over again!

Mic, Cory and Scott all carry a wealth of information on PSA, obedience, bite work, selection and dog training in general and they have been kind enough to agree to come to IL and share it with us. There will be something for everyone interested in protection sports from the person thinking about getting into it all the way up to top level competitors and trainers.
