It also appears he has "sable-ing" underneath the collar area. Is that normal for bleed thru?

Comment on the picture of the dog, Konig: the horizontal "stripes" over the hips is not brindle. What you see is a sable dog with the hair parted exposing the lighter under coat. What appears as stripes are just the black tipped guard hairs bunched together causing a striped appearance. This can be seen in many sable dogs, all the way across their sides. Brindle stripes would not be horizontal, but vertical.

Joanro, here's a really good example of the horizontal stripes you are talking about...

His coat maintained this look despite bathing and brushing until it shed out, then the new coat came in without the pattern. I also boarded an adult dog
who retained this look well past adulthood.

Good example, Melissa. It is also very noticeable on sable wolves. I have sable GSDs that are over eight years old that show this parted hair pattern as the norm. Looks like you took a wide toothed comb and raked the coat horizontally.

That's what I thought it was, lol, a comb job! Red Smile  And now I know better!

I saw this pup on Facebook, the dam was a black and tan, the sire I believe was white.  The pups were blues, fawns, etc.  The stripes went away as the pup got older, I couldn't find one of it older though.

Their solid blue male also looks kind of brindle.  I thought he was a brother to the above puppy but it looks like not.  http://baughmangermanshepherd.webs.com/bruno.htm

I am not sure, but I think this may be the striped pup when she was older, the markings appear to match.  If it's not her than it is a littermate.  http://baughmangermanshepherd.webs.com/sinja.htm

I saw in some previous posts that perhaps the other colors may be masking a brindle pattern?  Maybe?

The solid blue male almost looks merle...

A balck sable is more than just sable carrying black, as most dogs with that combination are not black sables.  Black sable GSD is only found in czech or DDR backgrounds.  Therefore, there must also be some kind of modifier, perhaps one geneticists haven't looked at yet, that a dog must have in addition to being sable/black in order for a dog to be a black sable.
