hellion, no offense, BUT--you certainly can't be expecting that this one individual forum site is going to be the sole source of donations... There are a lot of Siberian Husky messageboards on the web, and you need to be making your plea on those as well--like it or not, raising donations is as much a full-time job as a regular full-time job.

Additionally, since you're a new member here, there aren't many who know you, and you're not keeping your post current so people can become more familiar with you, Kinko and his situation. Have you followed up with the other veterinarians whose info was provided, to see whether the surgeries could be done less expensively than the price you'd already been quoted?  Have you updated us on that? There are a lot of animals in need of specialized veterinary care, equally as worthy as Kinko, who are in need of financial assistance, and if you don't keep up a dialogue with the dog-loving communities [note the plural], you can't expect that Kinko is going to be top of mind for everyone, everyday, just because he is for you--he's your dog, after all; most of use have our own dogs top of mind, too.  I see a lot of people having gone to a lot of trouble to ferret out information and resources for you--you need to log on everyday, or at least every other day, and update all of the websites you've made your request on, letting people know what you've found out from the other veterinary options, and how Kinko is doing while just on his eye drops, etc.  And while Kinko's problem is heartbreaking, it's not life-threatening, and it's not crippling--he can live a long, healthy and active life if the cataract surgery is never done, unlike a dog with crippling hip dysplasia, or a dog that was hit by a car and has a broken pelvis.  Not trying to make light of Kinko's problem, just being real with you--there are far, far worse conditions he could be suffering from, and it may just be that it's going to take a while to raise the amount you need.

I'm puzzled, also, by the fact that the website total amount doesn't reflect the $700 donation that had been announced--what happened there?

I have a Jack Russell who got a cataract in one eye when he was 2 and in the other when he was 5. The specialist vet gave me a surgery cost of $2000 for one eye and $2500 for both to remove the clouded lenses -- and if the retina in the eye were damaged, they wouldnt be able to do the surgery at all (which they wouldn't know until they did the test right before the surgery).

I expect costs to be higher for a larger dog, but not that much greater. Might be worth calling around and seeing if there're better options--this cost you've been quoted is huge.

I haven't done the surgery on my guy--first bc the vision in only one eye was compromised for a long time so he could still see pretty well, and then when the 2nd cataract showed up, the lens in the first affected eye had "fallen" aside and the dog could see through that eye again--according to the vet, almost as well as with the surgery. I did have some drops to give him if his eyes bothered him (the cataracts can cause some irritation), but I haven't used them in years because his eyes haven't been bothered or uncomfortable for him.

Hexe I understand where you are coming from. I have reached out to a few other forums but I haven't got much response and I have also been working hard to spread the word on husky pages on facebook. I admit that I am not the best at keeping everyone updated but that is not because I do not appreciate you guys I am just a very busy person. Sometimes I work all seven days of the week and usually longer than 8 hour shifts. I have two young children to take care of as well. I apologize for my lack of being able to update but I will try hard to start to more. As of right now Kinko is doing okay at home he has not been back to the specialist. I took him to a different vet from our regular one to have his eyes looked at and he said the same thing we have been hearing from our vet as well as the specialist. Right now Kinko is getting an eye drop in each eye every other day and you can see that his eyes are red and irritated. The $700 donation is from a local organization called the bummer fund. I'm not sure if I should call it a donation or a grant really. Either way it has not been made through the giveforward accound. That is something I applied for locally and it will be sent directly do the specialist once we schedule the appointment for surgery if we ever get to do that. I know that Kinko's condition is not life threatening but it still feels that way to me because of how close and attached I am to him. I don't want anyone here to feel that I expect you all to pay for his surgery or that I do not appreciate all the the support you all have shown me. In my personal life I have tried reaching out to friends and family and they all just act like this whole thing is a joke and they do not want to help me. I am still trying to connect with people and am greatful for every piece of advice I have received.

Please note this. I like this forum. This is ground zero. Its where my faith for this all started. Its my modivation. Its where I met people who helped me more with Kinko then my own friends and Family.
This is where we stand. We have nearly 1500 saved for Kinko thru the giveforward and the bummer fund as for my self can nearly save around 500 -1000 dollars. .. so Im struggling around $3000.
