If you search very carefully you can find small hobby breeders with outstanding dogs. Many of these people don't even compete in shows etc.. YOu just have to do your homework and be willing to travel and you can find a good one for $1500.00 or under. Plus if you like working dogs you can get one for $500.00, again if you search hard and long...

Thanks for the info! I am slightly wary of $500 dogs, but would love to find a good one for that price. I bought a $600 working dog once, he was 5 months old and so undersocialized I couldnt believe it. My wife took him to petsmart and he sprawled out on the floor, refused to move and growled at anyone who got close. Needless to say, he went back to where he came from. Haven't looked seriously at anything under $1000 since.

Flipfinish, sometimes one is happily surprised. My old retired working-line Fero granddaughter was a $500.00 puppy, and she is no doubt the most intelligent dog that I ever owned with hard courage and civil drive. But she was maybe a fluke, as she was able to reproduce her level of drive in but two (2) of her puppies. I guess that I was just lucky with her, and she still is a lot of fun to own. Twice I have paid as much as $2,000.00 for a VA-sired puppy, and was very disappointed each time. Last year I purchased a nice adult male with a V-3 rating (F.C.I.) for a very reasonable price (less than some of those VA puppies) with "a"1 hips, excellent conformation and a no-nonsense hard but controllable civil drive. Those dogs are out there-just never when you are really looking! They sort of "appear" from time to time. Bob-O

I am sure their are plenty of good pups out there for reasonable prices, problem is that I never seem to have the luck to find them. And don't think I havent tried, and tried, and tried. It has been exhausting, lack of good club, lack of good dogs I can afford, and the $1500 dog I did buy (Baron Vom Ulf Haus) has more sleep drive than anything!

flipfinish, Your just the kind of buyer we look for to give discounts to on our "hard drive" pups, knowing that you will take them "all the way" is good reason for us to discount the price and get that dog into a super working home ! I have a questions for you... email me if you like, echomeadowsheps@aol.com

This is all pretty basic business theory once again. Price is a function of the market forces. We have seen it many times. High demand pups of excellent parentage in an affluent market will command TOP dollar. Prices will drop as the balance tips the other way. I am willing to bet that we have all under priced a pup when the placement was good. I also do not feel shocked that a breeder might agree to a very high price after refusing to sell at lower prices. If your dog is worth $1000000 to YOU, you might well be tempted by an offer of $2000000.
