Thanks for all the input!!!!

Maybe I should use a pine/cedar mixture in the kennels for the bug repellent (if the dogs are obviously okay health wise with it). I dont use any kind of insect preventative on the dogs (not frontline, not advantix, nothing) And have not had an issue. But it might be worth it to have some cedar in the kennels.

I have the plastic Petmate travel crates, so im not terribly concerned about the shavings getting all over the vehicle. I have a Honda Element so the vehicle is rubber and easy to clean.

I thought of newspaper but in my experience no matter how shredded and fluffy i make it, it always gets matted down and is just a mess to clean up if a dog pukes/pees/poops/etc.

What about aspen shavings, or even that "carefresh" stuff that they sell for small animal bedding? (though it has a horrible odor)

Puppies eat stuff their not supposed to, so find out what the product will do if ingested. Like, does it expand with liquid so it's going to swell inside pup's gut? cedar shavings don't get rid of fleas on dogs or their wouldn't be a jillion products on the market, since fleas develop tolerance for chemicals over time. News paper may not be convenient to pick up when wet, but they're puppy safe.

have used cedar for 10 years....never a problem with dogs or human. I'm sure my dogs have ingested some as I feed some raw bones and I know they've dropped them. I do put pine in every once in a while....cedar is getting expensive:-)

joanro,

thank you again for the input!

Ive never had an issue with puppies and pine shavings. Have always had my puppies on pine. If they do ingest its usually just a shaving or two, and it always (thus far) has passed through without problems.

I suppose I can just do the newspaper with a dusting of cedar?

judron55, same here! i always give them raw bones/bully sticks and i also feed them in the kennel..and I know when they charge in sometimes the shavings land in the food bowl..and in they go! Have never had a problem!

Thanks again everyone!

I know with alot of small animals and birds cedar is highly toxic and causes skin/respiratory issues. That is why i asked, could not find anything on google about it in regards to dogs.

Guys, I wasn't talking about dog's getting shavings in their stomach, I was talking about processed products, kitty litter stuff that expands when wet. Stuff like that, that would undoubtedly make them sick if a pup ate it. My dogs ingest shavings inadvertently also, when eating bones in the kennel. They just poop it out ;(

Oh gotcha! I misunderstood you :) Makes sense, will stick with shavings or newspaper!
