Pharaoh

by Pharaoh on 11 February 2012 - 20:02

I fed both of my dogs from puppyhood on raw food.

The experience was very different with each.  Pharaoh chewed his drumsticks very thoroughly.  Mariah was downright scary.  She merely crushed into the drumstick and swallowed it.  So, I ground her food with my grinder and also gave her prepared ground meals from Excel K9.  I only gave her large beef soup bones to gnaw on.  She is now 10 months old and very thoroughly chews her food for some time now.

I have been feeding raw since 1998 when I switched two adult dogs to raw.  Pharaoh and Mariah were the first experience with raw feeding puppies.  I do believe you have to carefullly observe puppies when they are eating.  They are all different.

My experience is identical to Michele's.

My female GSD carefully chews every morsel for what seems like hours (you have to give her a good 30 minutes to eat her meal). My male pup is the complete opposite. No piece of food is too big to try to cram down his throat whole- he actually successfully swallowed (albeit briefly) an oxtail (whole, uncut) that was longer than he was. I now give him only giant food that is impossible to swallow whole (like a whole beef trachea or large sections of chewy beef tongue, etc.) or ground food. It's truly awe inspiring to watch his enthusiasm for food!
