Janette

I have a dog that has this. My study on the internet leads me to believe that this is a immune system failure. Kind of like demodectic mange. It can either go away on its own or be chronic. I have tried a steriod type injection which did relieve it temporarely. But have been just trying to let it take its course at this point. The dog doesnt seem to be too uncomfortable. Its been going on for about 5 monthes and the dog is 1 1/2 years old.

It was concluded that my GSD may have developed his sores from 1 of the types of grasses here in FL. Baja grass, when seeding, shoots up stalks that form a 'V'. At the time, it seemed as if my guy would never be 100%; soon after his fur regrew, a lump popped up behind his scapula. This was determined to be an enlarged lymph node, which went down as rapidly as it had arisen. So in regards to how long his interdigital problems took to subside, I honestly cannot remember. Since then (over 3 years ago), "Rommel" has not had a serious concerning single issue, so I am not inclined to agree that it is an immune system failure. However, it did occur at a time when my GSD's immune system was weakened- so stress, seasonal changes, etc... could not be ruled out entirely.

There are a million and one theories on why some dogs get these interdigital swellings. Blitz's began to subside after a few day on the keflex, soaks, and Bactroban. For a few years he still had small, hard swellings where the "cysts" were, but I checked him last night and they are gone now. Blitz has never been sick a day in his 4 1/2 years other than occasional diarrhea. Has never seen a vet for an illness.

Has anyone tried using virgin coconut oil as a preventative therapy for treating interdigital furunculosis?  I have read some about it and want feedback before I try it with my lab.
