Manjeet- From my experiences, I do think that cattle dogs can do really well at protection work and obedience.  They are very intelligent and they have the drive for the work usually.  As for them doing tracking, I think they would do well, but I have no experience tracking with them personally.  I know there is atleast one other person on here that has cattle dogs, or a cattle dog,  that does protection work with it.  I haven't been on here much lately though, so I do not know if they are still active here.

As for my views on German Shepherds,  they are my favorite breed.  I think they are one of the most versatile.  You can have virtually any level of drive depending on which lines you get.  The reason I didn't say anything about them before is because I thought that the OP had pretty much decided that they wanted something smaller than a GSD.

@ hallix Oh okay. But I think, the OP should pick working line gsd, some working lines gsds are smaller than show line gsds and so have more stamina, endurance & agility. Australian cattle dogs are very good but they tend to be stubborn. This is what I do not like in them.
